Para phasing the law, it states that anything obstructing the complete view of the license plate is illegal. The plate "frames" that cover too much as well as bumper or trailer hitches are also, by the book, illegal. I have also heard of people getting tickets because the plate was bent down to much, like on the back of a truck that hit the hitch too many times.

Front plates have been the law since I started driving in '76 and cant speak for anything prior to that.

You don't understand why desecrating a $100k plus car with an uggo plate that basically serves zero function is...undesirable?

I'll tell you what, though. I don't break laws. No speeding, no littering, etc.
But I ain't doing this plate thing on my nice car. The truck's got both, the wife's SUV, and even my motorcycle, and that's fine.

HOWEVER, if I do get a ticket, I will pay it quietly and without complaining bc that's what you do when you break the freakin' law. You don't complain about it.

Yeah, I've been getting away with it for over 10 years now with my Porsche. I'll pay the ticket if i ever get one, but I'm still not putting a front plate on my lovely car.

There was another thread on here just in the last month or two that explored this in detail.
You need to read the actual law to see the specific exceptions for things allowed to block the plate. Besides bike racks, the hoist for wheelchairs is another.

Don't some newer-model hoists for wheelchairs have their own spaces for license plates? I think I've seen those around.

Exactly.

And I couldn't care less about getting a ticket for not having a front plate on mine, as it's a small price to pay when the German auto I own wasn't (easily) made for a front plate.

Ironically, Germany (along with virtually every other country outside the U.S.), requires a front license plate.

This has gone off the rails. A few simple points:

1. It is a requirement to have a front plate in Texas. Simple fact, either comply, or pay the fine.

2. For those that cannot resist discussing their German autos, as stated by ged_782, those same German autos would have front plates on them in Germany, or anywhere else in the E.U. The reason is it is actually quite rare to be pulled over for speeding Germany. You will just get a bill in the mail with the details of where you were caught speeding (date, time, location), and a lovely photo of your car with the speed data from the camera trap. The Polizei are pretty imaginative with their methods. They have regular civilian looking cars with dark tinted rear windows they can hide cameras in. They have dismounted cameras they like to use in the 30 KPH zones, normally seen tucked into hedges at the cutouts for pedestrian crossings, etc.
