Nearly 4500 posts in this thread...can someone explain how is having one thread on so many restaurant openings/closings a good idea again?!?

Because 1 thread is better than 4500 threads on various restaurants opening and closing?

Several restaurants open and close every week in this city. Some weeks, we'd get inundated with threads on that.

I vote for keeping the one thread.

Urbanspoon is a classic example of taking what in 2013 was a good website dedicated to providing both amateur and professional food criticism, shaking up the management, serving up the extremely unsatisfactory results to a steadily declining user base and pretending all is well.
As any crowdsourced site, it was (though the new team never saw this) extremely dependent on having a core group of highly engaged super-users (here called "primes", the "elites" on yelp) that did the actual grunt work (upload reviews, take photos, notify them of openings/closings, etc.).
Through new arbitrary interpretations of their "rules", the new team managed to antagonize a lot of these users (not just in SA but nationally) and assure their disengagement.
What's left? Missing listings for new/closed places, vastly diminished review/photo content, a preponderance of "one-hit gripers" complaining about their orders being messed up and even obvious "shill reviewers" touting their workplaces.
