The re-usable bag concept is very popular in Germany. Most of the stores we went to over there didn't have throw away bags at all. If you didn't have a re-usable bag, you could by one for a small charge at the register. Maybe it will catch on here.

It is great that they'll give them away. I couldn't fathom the idea of buying a bag from them. I'll be helping the environment but helping HEB cut their plastic bag expense.

Maybe they should give customers that use the bags a .05 or .10 cents discount.

Using these bags reminds me when I would go shopping with my abuelita and she would use her morral to carry groceries.

I've got a few of 'em. The trick is remembering to take the darned things into the store with me!
Even when I do remember them, if I don't do the self-checkout, I have to practically bag them myself. The clerks really don't understand that I don't care if you put the beans in with the razors and the juice! So long as the bread is on top - all is well!

HEB gave a way free canvas shopping bags 10+ years ago when they opened HEB #1/ Oakpark. My mom still has them and uses them.

So true!! We have a variety of Trader Joe's shopping bags, one is even the insulated type, and I seem to always forget to take them with me. I have this idealistic vision of getting a Vespa and heading down to HEB with 3 or 4 of those bags, picking up the goods, and heading back ~ groceries in reusable bags in my little basket on the back. Ahhhhh, one can dream, right? giggle!!

Do plan to be there on Tues, tho! They say 1 per customer. Do kids count? We could get a mess of bags!!!

That's exactly what I was wondering.

I have some Trader Joe's bags, some Stop N Shop bags and a few others. I joked I should add the HEB bag to my collection, but it's so small compared to the ones I already have.

My problem is getting the baggers to recognize that you can put more than 1-2 items in the bag. And even then they like to first put the stuff in plastic bags then into the canvas. ARRGGHHH! I end up bagging my own groceries 90% of the time.

Yup, it's been that way as long as I can remember. In Switzerland too.

I've heard of a few US cities initiating this. I think it's great. It's about time. I've been using my canvas bags for more than 18 years now...and you know what? They're the same bags I started with in 1988 or so!
