Never knew Dr. Gray was a drunk, it was just so very extremely noticeable that he could barely breathe.
That symptom outshone all else as I remember him.
His breathing seemed so labored and loud I was surprised that he could merely catch his next breath. Each breath he inhaled seemed a huge effort for his system. One could discern just by being in the same room with him that he was killing himself, slowly. I remember approximately when he died. No surprise at the time for me, even if I was only a youngster. I must have been maybe ten yrs old but can still remember he would make loud sucking sounds inhaling the air into his lungs in the little treatment rooms there on the southeast side.
I can still recall very vividly you could hear the wind rushing into his lungs- a pause- then , a pause
before the next effort.
I will say this for him in his defense , he found an ulcer , knew what it was already, inside my mother's stomach even after she had seen specialist after specialist to find an answer to her constant heartburn and stomache. Imagine our surprise at this. Our own Dr. Grey.
Yes , Grey was loco. I can still see his huge bloodshot eyes and enormous black mustache today in my minds eye- eyeballs bugged all out, that was how he looked at his patients all of the time. Put that tongue depressor down your throat and then go and write in his notes and all the while barely able to breathe and with that huge paunch hanging down, seated at his stool making entries. You could readily see he was in bad shape all the while he was treating us- when he should have been taking care of himself. He was like a figure of a caricature in a movie short of a quack doctor. He was a kindly figure to me, quiet all of the time, he never screwed up for us, Perhaps it was the morning appts., yes. I do not know.

I remember Trapper about your chickens; enormous old 6'6" Mr. Bryan of Connell middle school and the Bill Miller family that lived there on Utopia Rd, just west of Pecan Valley right near Old Mr. Bryan
and his chicken farm- that 8th grade math teacher. Mr. Bryan was a good guy. I can still picture him, too, walking around the front of the classroom, huge, he was, teaching us beginning Algebra inside those searing hot classrooms. He was so enormous that his teacher's desk legs ...he had raised and put on, on large wooden blocks so it too would be tall enough enough for him to be comfortably seated at. Somehow he seemed out of place in a classroom. All of the other teachers were either women or regular sedentary guys, even Coach Martin...but there he was, walking around the front of that classroom, enormous and teaching little kids the "new math".
Yes that was a long time ago, Trap. My own dad is 87 yrs old now and still kicking strong.
You knew Mr. Foster the High school teacher too , right? Is Mr. Bryan gone by now I wonder? Foster ?

Your problem Trap, I can discern now, is, that ---you are still running around with old Dr. Grey's hypodermic needle in your butt after all these years.
You should get that looked at. It would cheer your disposition if you did and you would feel much better
about things.

He's the same dimwit that said I need my appendix out immediately but I raised so much hell at home my mom took me to another doctor who gave me a dose of Maalox and sent us on our way. I still have my appendix. After he broke the needle off in me we learned to see him in the AM. After lunch he couldn't hardly hit the floor with his hat he'd be so drunk. He finally gave it up when his liver gave out. And yes, it's the same doctor Grey at Goliad, Clark and Dauchy(sp) Road at the time. I lived at the triangle of Avondale, Goliad, and Clark where the Parkair ended up being. At one time that triangle was nothing but chickens as my dad raised chickens for eggs and to supply Bill Church of Churchs Chicken, his meat. Dr Grey was the only local doctor out in those parts at the time. He was also loco.

Hello. It's obvious no one has posted in this thread in a few years. Come back! I am a Southside/Southeast product. I grew up in Highland Hills area. Always lived off Goliad Rd. I went to Kate Schenck Elem, Rogers Jr High, and Highlands HS. The baseball field, tennis courts and parking lot right across the street from the high school, that property was owned by my Grandpa Gonzaba and his brother until the school bought it from them. My Grandpa's house was moved over to Hicks Ave. I remember as a little girl walking hand in hand with my grandpa to the Gonzaba Store that was on Elgin. I also remember lots of birthday parties at Pecan Valley Park - and we always had a piñata in tow! I saw someone mention the movie The Sugarland Express. The scene at the carlot where the motorhome was shot up was a carlot on SW Military Drive. The original name of the carlot lot that they used was Paul Moore's Used Cars and the drive in theater was right behind it. I know this because my dad worked at that carlot during the time of filming. I remember going inside the motorhome and seeing all those bullet holes all over it. It was exciting for me and my sisters. We really believed our dad was a "big thing" thing, a star in our eyes. I guess he really always was...even in our older years. Shakey's Pizza. We went there on occasion. It wasn't our favorite (or at least mine) pizza place. I grew up eating Capparelli's Pizza - my dad was friends with the Capparelli's so we were able to go get whatever we wanted from there, the one on Rigsby I believe, and they knew dad would always go by and take care of the bill. I remember lots of shopping at Leeds, which was right off Goliad Rd, on Southcross. I crave the past and crave the memories that others have about the past - in the area I grew up in. I do hope that this thread can continue! Thank you!

Is anyone as old as I am and you remember riding the city bus? You put your money in a drop box or if you had a token you dropped it in. Riding from downtown out to the Harlandale area required an extra coin, probably another nickel. The bus route would split at Toudouze and either go to Pleasanton or South Flores. We lived on Southcross. and then it became West Southcross. We would get on the newly air conditioned bus in the early 1960's and ride to Sears. Then go to Sears in the summer afternoons as it was air conditioned. We would sit in the pattern department and look at patterns to avoid the heat. We also had dances at the Harlandale Civic Center and there was a small library behind the Civic Center. Our Girl Scout Brownie troop met there. The boys pony league played at a field that is now unrecognizable but it was on what is now called Southcross close to Roosevelt Ave. Just a few thoughts for now that I have not read before. Keep up the good work of bringing back the old days as we all know we tend to forget.

Default That is not how I did it,

I used to get a transfer ticket for two cents extra and could go from Highland Hills to -downtown and then with two cent from downtown to Harlandale - all this for a total of twelve cents.
Before I-37 was built we had to drive by San Jose Mission there across to White st. back when the enormous Pig Stand cement pig used to sit there at the intersection of White and Roosevelt.
Someone else argued here in the Harlandale thread that the Cement pig never used to sit at the intersection of Loop 13 and Roosevelt. At that Seafood restaurant there. I too can recall it still, seeing it there at some time ago. What was it Captain Jim's?
Say....1957.

The pig sat in a lot about half way between Mission Rd. and Roosevelt. I'll never be sure of the time period (years it sat there) my memory isn't that good. . I was told by an older lady i knew that the pig once was attached to the front of Melody Ranch or Cap't Jim's as an entrance. I think she was mistaken. Cap't Jim's we now know was once the Trocadero Club with dancing on the roof. Photos of it have been posted and there's nothing much different from it's later life as Cap't Jim's. The old building (unique shape) which housed Melody Ranch's changing rooms and perhaps a lounge is now a "Sport's" bar (AKA good place to get shot). Harding and Roosevelt.

Harlandalegirl, Southcross from Pleasanton Road east to McCreless was made up of 3 different streets. Tennessee, Pacific, and Dauchy Road.

Default VFW Blvd.,

The cement pig sat at what is now the intersection of VFW blvd., and Roosevelt. It used to be called White Rd. before it was named VFW blvd. Yes, just down from the Drive in and Nicha's Restaurant. It did used to sit out front of Capn' Jims years ago before it sat at Roosevelt and White Rds.
I suggest you don't recall that. As I previously wrote we constantly drove down Military or White Rd. to get to Harlandale ( where grandparents lived near Pleasanton Rd.) , weekly for years and years before the freeway system was built.
It was there on Military. I witnessed it being there and at White Rd also. This Pig statue can be moved by truck.
In the Movie " Even Hand" which is a story about a short period in the lives of two San Antonio police officers the Giant Pig -- it even sits at one of the old Pig Stand Restaurants.

I saw it in both places @ Military and White Rd.s many years ago. Recall it there too.

The pig was located as I said about half way between Mission Rd. and Roosevelt Ave. Slightly closer to Roosevelt. (not at Roosevelt and E.White Ave.) Nicha's now has a parking lot near but still east of the pigs former location. Of this I'm quite clear and confident. Only E.White ave east of Roosevelt has recently been renamed as VFW blvd. (no doubt by another out of control councilman).

Haven't seen it but the movie "Evenhand" no doubt would show the pig at it's present location. It's at the former Pig Stand on S .St Mary's near Pereida. This was likely it's original location.

I've lived less than a mile from Military Drive and Roosevelt most of my life. The "Pig" was never at Roosevelt and Military Dr. at Capt's Jim's or the little seafood shack attached to it's backside. I would have trouble recollecting, let's say, pre 56' or 57' maybe. I can say with certainty it wasn't there post 1960 or previous 4 or 5 years. We frequented Cap't Jim's and during most of my school years lived a few short blocks from the pig's location on White Ave. Melody ranch another suggested location of the pig ....not in my memory. You likely saw the pig sitting about where it is today.

I think the pastel artwork was near to where the candy counter was. Wasn't it ?It looked similar to the
All of those sights and smells and sounds of the earjy sixties,...gone. Sears always smelled like popcorn.
The mural was on the north facing wall over the men's shoe dept. That would be the back of the north wall of the snack-bar/cafeteria. It was up real high on the wall. Sears was a southside true landmark and is sorely missed.

That's right our Church was right behind the car lot on Ascot. Loop 13 Drive-in was just west of it. More was filmed right in front of my cousins and our homes on Peterson and Forsen st. near Hutchins and Zarzamora. We had cars in the movie.
