I can agree with the fact that Kerrville for the most part has crappy crappy pay and no jobs Right now. They really are not hiring anywhere not even james Avery. The City of Kerrville will say they are hiring but usually they already know who they want to fill the job before it even posts. There isnt a ton of places here in the first place to find work, but Kerrville hospital is usually always hiring RN's and LVN's. Which is about the only place I know right now thats hiring. So if your not either of those than you are pretty much screwed. Go to San Antonio.....Trust me you dont want to live in Kerrville anyways. Good Luck!

Default Hard Truth

I live in Kerrville, but I commute.

Part of the problem with Kerrville in my opinion is the "retirement" albatross anchored to it. Until that changes, why would a big corporation want to have a presence there?

I would consider Kerrville predominately a retirement community -- roughly 30% of the population is over 65. The largest store in town is Walmart, and there are only a very few chain restaurants. The largest employers are perhaps the hospital, James Avery (jewelry manufacturing), Walmart/HEB grocery store, and the Mooney airplane factory (although they layed off virtually everyone recently in 2008/09). Small businesses come and go. San Antonio is too far to commute, but it is a city of 1.4 million, so jobs requiring certifications are likely to be more plentiful there. Being former military myself, and having come from a military family, I can say I have lived in all areas of this country. The Texas mind set regarding "outsiders" is different from anywhere I have ever lived. The climate, however, is worth the effort to try to blend in. It rivals Napa, CA (lived there), but hotter. But jobs are not evident from this retired person's viewpoint.

I saw some of the huge ranches in and around Ingram, TX. Good Lord. Karl Rove lived and voted there, but I think he moved recently.

You're absolutely right about the job situation in Kerrville. I've lived here for nearly 25 years and it's never changed. Unless you're a doctor, RN, attorney or lucky enough to come from money (and momma and daddy still take care of you), chances are you're most likely to find a service/support position here that pays minimum wage or slightly higher.

I commuted to San Antonio for 10 years and for others to flippantly suggest commuting to SA as a viable option have either not commuted for long or have never done so. It's fine for a limited period but is not a long term solution and can be cost-prohibitive.

Maybe you should start a church. There are still a few blocks in Kerrville that don't have one yet. From what I see, you can preach politics, horde lots of money and never pay a penny of tax. And people here will adore you.

Good luck.

The previous poster is correct. Doctors, lawyers, rich bratty kids, and the people who work at Taco Casa are the only ones with money
