A light rail system would be a taxpayer's nightmare if done wrong. That's what a lot of voters are afraid of. They don't want to pay to ease the commutes of people in "other parts of town" and they don't trust politicians to build it in a way that benefits them.

I would need to see a very significant Federal funding component of at least 50% for the construction phase and ongoing Federal funding for the operation of the system to be convinced that light rail is right for San Antonio.

This could be great news:

State Rep. Working On Bill For Light-Rail Funding - San Antonio News Story - KSAT San Antonio (http://www.ksat.com/news/17542449/detail.html - broken link)

By the way, a poll conducted shows that 82% in San Antonio would consider light rail (see story below). That is really close to the numbers we see in this poll.

Just wanted to point out that Houston recently approved $1.46 billion in expansion plans for their state-of-the-art light rail system. With it comes about 25,000 jobs!

Hmm... wouldn't it be nice.

Agree.
San Antonio is a city of 1,000,000 proper. A city in developed country like the US needs one. Needs underground stations too.

Really,
how are those tolls doing paying for the land that they were built on?
That's why you are never going to see a toll being built anywhere unless the government (public money) helps them out.

I'm fine with tolls, if they pay for the land that they built it on.

What they do is like if I started charging $5 a person to use a public park just because I'm taking care of it, even though the park "belongs to everybody".

I think San Antonio could get a leg up on both Houston and Dallas if they built a monorail. Nice, quiet, energy-efficient, magnetized monorail! I could totally see that happening.
