Why is it that so many San Diegans love personalized license plates?

95% of them are pathetic and make no sense to me. As for the plates I do somewhat comprehend, I don't laugh one bit.

Does the state of CA charge extra for vanity plates?

I have to say, the best personalized plate I have ever seen was on a SMART car. I believe it read, "Not Dumb"

People get them for many reasons. The ones that don't make sense to us probably mean something to the person that has them.

One example was a neighbor of ours whose dog saved the wife's life by alerting her husband when she was having a heart attack. They got personalized plates with the dog's name on it to honor the dog. Now the dog had no idea what the plates said and strangers would not have known the meaning but they meant something to our neighbors.
