Actually I don't have anything to add - - just wanted to be the 200th person to reply to my own thread. I think that this thread was probably one of the first ten that I made here - - I'm guessing at least a quarter of my views have been from this one thread. By the way, that puppy that I was worried about when I started this thread just turned 5 years old earlier this week. Now we live around Lake Murray and my bigger fear is a skunk rather than a coyote.

Default Inland Rail Trail

The coyote bunch along the North County Inland Rail Trail are not as shy as I wish they were. The morning walk for the dog and I found one just sitting and watching us. I had time to secure the dog to a fence and come back and try to shoot a picture. I guess I am still amazed at these coyotes who are so comfortable in a setting that is far more city than country. Yes, there is the creek and water fowl are pretty abundant...but so close and so comfortable? Wow! (Going to try to post/attach the pic....but not sure how)

Cute little guy! A few morning back, I went out to get our paper and here is one sitting across the street, peering into a squirrel hole. I figured the sound of our security gate opening would send him running, but, nope. He sat down and kept one on me, and one eye on the squirrel hole. Wish I had my phone/camera with me.

Au contraire.

It's a 1-based system. 1 + 200 = 201. Ergo, the OP's post #201 is the 200th reply.

To stay on-topic, I saw a coyote along the Metra tracks in the middle of Chicago!!! My immediate reactions were, "he's a lot bigger than I thought a coyote would be", and "wtf? In the middle of the city????"

Listen carefully! My little dog (9 lb terrier) was just killed on tuesday morning (Aug 20, 2013). I live in a housing development behind Palomar College (Santa Fe Hills)...My back yard has iron fencing and my husband drilled plexiglass to it along the bottom to keep the coyotes from sniffing between the rungs. My little dog was outside barking at the fence around 5am. We heard a really loud SNAP/BANG and ran outside. There was nothing...we noticed that the bottom of the plastic had been broken. Then we panicked and started calling the dogs name. We didn't find him and deduced that the coyotes had gotten him (we've seen two hanging around for several weeks). Anyway, about this time, we look down the embankment (maybe 5 yards) and see the coyote trotting along with my dead dog in his mounth. The bastard! Really brazen. Do NOT leave your pets unattended. Seriously. This is the 3rd in my neighborhood... :-( Just sick over this.

If it makes you feel any better I shoot the $#$%#$% any chance I get. Sorry about your pooch. I'm guessing the yote jumped the fence then snapped everything getting out. Too bad you didn't have a bow to shoot the bastreed before it happened.

So so sorry to hear this -- just an awful thing to encounter. We live on the other side of town and hear them often up the hill (Double Peak). I've been warned jogging at night to watch out for them. Don't think I've lived anywhere in North County that wasn't next to coyote habitat.
