In two weeks I'll be going to San Diego with a friend of the family that has family in San Diego. Last year I was called about an application I put in at Scripps Hospital, but I was not certified as a Medical Coder. I was thinking about the military once I get there to go to the Navy reserves at least that would be some form of income and benefits. I thought once in the reserves you don't have to travel the world just train twice a week?

Talking Military/San Diego

In two weeks I will be going to San Diego with a family friend. I then will be putting applications out there for medical billing jobs also checking out the navy reserve. I thought the navy reserve was only meeting two weekends out of the month for training. I have two associate degrees only one in healthcare. Do you think I could go in the military as a officer making decent with one child?

I also wonder whether the Navy will take a 33 year old single mother. Even in the reserves. I think the OP may want to go by the nearest recruiting office and ask that before she goes any further with her non plan.

To be honest MS is last in just about everything that's good and first in just about everything that's bad. I can say this family and church is the only two positive that I love about MS. I just want to give my son a new life better than I had and not making the same mistake for just settling for dead in jobs. I went to school and have two degrees, but that does not matter because the jobs here goes to people that know somebody in that company or hiring. Also the negative about the south the prejudice that still here. I'm not saying San Diego is perfect and yes I have thought about other cities but San Diego has always been my first choice, which in two weeks will come to pass.

I talked to a Navy recruiter yesterday and the age in the reserve is 39 and active duty is 35.

Even if you join the reserves, you'll still have to go to a minimum of two weeks training. That is, unless it's changed. I was also told that none of the services are taking enlistees right now, that they're full. You might get additional advice if you also post your questions on the military forum.

Considering your situation I would not advise moving here unless you already got a job lined up as well as some money saved up.

And as far as joining the navy, I STRONGLY advise going on active duty while you still have a slim chance. With your degrees you should be able to go in as a e-2 or e-3, you'll gonna need a bachelors if your trying to go the officer route. One thing I gotta say is DO NOT go reserve, if you think its gonna be a decent source of income for you, you're gonna be in for a rude awakening, trust me, $200 a month is basically gas money in this city, and you being non-prior service you'll only qualify for SOME of the benefits. Go active duty while your still eligible, good luck

The area I live in has a couple of hospitals that always seem to be advertising for medical coding and billing. It's 2 and a half hours to San Diego, but closer than where you are now. Palm Springs area. Just an idea. Maybe you could look farther out to get a job, and then move there later on once you are settled in the new state. Good luck.

I think it's true everywhere that having connections is the most likely way to get a job.
