I will be working in Mountain View, but from what ive heard so far...san mateo might be good. SF is probably too far for commuting everyday.

Not sure how San Mateo will have more to offer for you than Mtn. View/Palo Alto, other than being located closer to the city. The downtown area is a bit larger, but both Mtn View and Palo Alto have plenty of bars/restaurants, etc.

There's a big place called Stanford that has potential for enjoyment. Maybe University Avenue for nighttime merriment.

You're going to need to give us way more information about what you want and need before you can get any sort of relevant advice here.

Palo Alto is very nice... IF you can afford it! $$$! Very walkable around University Ave.

Palo Alto is one of the most expensive areas of the entire Bay Area...it's also really not that exciting (which you would think it is since it has a college there)...most people I know at Stanford end up going into the city for most of their entertainment (then again, most of my Stanford friends are graduate students and post-docs, so there might be some bias there).

But, if you're looking for affordability to go along with walkable neighborhoods, there are much better options.

San Mateo is much cheaper than Palo Alto (pretty important when you're 23).

Mountain View and San Mateo are probably similarly priced. San Mateo is closer to city (which is where most people that are 23 will want to hang out on weekends), Mountain view would be closer to work. Both good options, if you can find something you can afford.

Hahaha, right now, you're kinda living in a dream-world then.

You apparently want to live the life of a swinging bachelor in a young, vibrant community (nothing wrong with that...), but that's hard to do -- even hard to fake doing -- in any yuppie community in the SF Bay area.

Most parts of San Mateo are nice, but you want a crowd around your age, so as someone else mentioned, Palo Alto, close to University Ave, is what you want.

Another choice to consider is Santa Cruz or Berkeley -- both college towns with a lot of people in their early 20s and a nightlife plus some low-cost, no-frills housing options.

With a roommate also paying a similar amount of rent (or more) you should be able to find something halfway decent.
