These are some huge numbers. I definitely think there are layoffs ahead. I think old school tech companies are losing ground to upstarts. Particularly in enterprise software.

Computers are a very mature business, and there isn't growth in this space anymore. Most of the tablet and mobile market is owned by Samsung, LG and Apple. The former PC stalwarts missed the boat on gaining market share in that space.

Some of the "unicorns" do not have fundamentals. And may lose employees. But generally they have high revenue per employee, and not that many employees so layoffs will be comparatively small.

But the go grow go mentality of the past few years is over.

Previous downturns started in 2000 and 2008. It's 2016, so we're about due for the next one.

Yahoo is not a surprise. The surprise is Marrissa Myer wants her execs to sign a 3 year promise not to leave but she has layoffs, maybe employees should ask for 3 year promise not to layoff.

What surprises me is that according to the link, 1600 employees is only 15% of Yahoo's workforce, which means that this fossil still employs more than 10,000 people. What the heck do all these people do? As far as I can tell, Yahoo's only innovation during the past ten years was to change its logo (which is something that Google does almost every day). Maybe they are still paying thousands of people to do nothing but surf the web all day long?

Not shocked, I predict 3rd quarter bubble pop, but others have been saying this back in the fall.

Maybe when it happens there will be a Silicon Valley paradigm shift and all of that brainpower will be put to use in a truly helpful (to the planet and humanity) way instead of contributing to disposable useless junk and for what? to make gobs of money and feed the corporate / consumer machine which is certainly not helping one bit and i would argue is doing a lot of harm.
Off the point i realize and i'm sure naive and idealistic but just sayin'.

it is not just the tech companies, it is also those mindless consumers driving the sales and hypes of junk technology like driverless cars, smart watch and and likes.

Absolutely!
The sheeple mindlessly jumped on the tech / tech toy band wagon.
And young people don't even know any better at this point.
Why the h*** would anyone want a driverless car?!
So they can keep their heads glued to some friggin screen and be more "productive". Gag.
It's all quite disturbing to me.
Borg
Seriously.
