Why does the city consider this to be such a bad thing? (renting to tenants for short lengths of time). And what about landlords that 'sub-divide' a big house and rent it out to several different families? I was actually forced to move several months ago because the duplex I was living in was discovered to be an illegal conversion. Good thing I live in a small house now with a long term lease - so hopefully no more bombshells headed my way anytime soon). - Tough times push landlords into black-market rentals | HeraldTribune.com

this is the only place that we have been that does not allow weekly or a couple week rentals. because of that the county misses out on quite a bit of taxes. why would some one send in the tax if they rented their house for a week when the limit is a month. thats kind of like saying we broke the law but paid the tax. we went to the outer banks for years and never encountered a one month minimum.

different rules for different locations
in MY neighborhood in TX I can't rent my house out short term--and I would not be happy if the people on my street were doing that

the city council did it because they did not want transient renters--turning condos into hotels
and I can't say I really blame them
having people come/go is hard wear and tear on hotels so you know it is on condos too

people did not buy their condo with the knowledge that someone down the hall was going to turn it into rental property like that--
it does defray the value and would make a bad price even worse
I can understand why some people are driven too it--and I think the city council was going to consider changing the rules in Venice but don't know if they did

In areas of MD, they also have zoning ordinances that will not allow three or more unrelated people to live in the same house either. The purpose is to stop people from renting to students (I think), but it would also prevent some rentals like that.

loves2read is definitely correct. The county wouldn't be doing this if so many people didn't complain. People don't want their neighbors to operate a hotel. People are pretty mad about it in Venice too.
