If you want the room to look wider put it on the diagonal. I like the diagonal look myself.we did that once in a home and it changed the whole look of the house.

Tile on the diagonal is more expensive to install and is considered an upgrade.

Some people like it, and for some people it's OK.

We did it in our current Naples house; we are skipping it in our N Venice new house, as the room layout doesn't really need it, nor does it add much to the visual feel.

Often, it is not 'needed'/noticeable/any benefit in some rooms. Your pick...

And, some new construction really charge a lot for that method install.

We did 24 X 24 tiles on a diagonal and I love the way it looks. Go diagonal!

We did no tile on the diagonal in our new house due to the increased installation costs. However, we did a lot of 12x24 tile in staggered patterns and it still looks very nice, including the master shower.

Staggered looks very modern.

Diagonal with a border has a more timeless look IMHO.

In large open areas, I like 18" tile or larger on the diagonal or brick pattern to break up the dreaded grid look. Unless you're using real stone with minimal grout lines, then you can do whatever and it still looks great.
