According to Tampa Bay's ABC Action News, 1679 people in Sarasota were exposed as having accounts on the Ashley Madison site.

The New Tampa area came in first with 4206 Ashley Madison users.

Why would anyone think that a site like this is going to be 100% privacy protected in this age of skilled hackers?

By the way, if you think your email address or that of someone close to you may be on the compromised list, the article gives info on how to find out via the website Trustify.

I don't know why anyone would be interested in whose name is on the list of members, especially if they're private citizens, since it's an invasion of privacy. Of course I'm not condoning cheating, but what's next? Medical records? Pharmacy purchases? I mean, I bet a lot of people would like to know which one of their neighbors spent time in a psychiatric hospital or who got a prescription for AZT. IMO, the headline is more shameful than people who joined the site.

However, I do agree people are foolish when they post too much personal information online.

There are a couple of situations that I can think of where disclosure may be important. One would be members of the military in certain job positions where security is crucial (and McDill is in the Tampa area). The other could be someone in a position of power in the government, such as an administrator or judge. You would not want people in positions of security or power leaving themselves open to potential blackmailing.

The problem with all of these articles is they are going for the sensational news so the bigger the number the better. A lot of those e-mail addresses were actually just "looky loos" versus breaking out the credit card and actually paying. I think there is more damage in just providing a search for an e-mail account without knowing if the person actually paid for the service or was just curious. The article even states: "Marcuse claims it takes a team to confirm the email address is linked to a bank account, home address and/or phone number."

More than anything else it shows how stupid people are.

My guess - and, of course, this is a guess since I am male - is that young and attractive women (married or not) who desire sexual partners don't need to sign up on web sites.

Am I right?

Not unless they're looking to become more "financially secure" from it...

Women of ANY age don't really need to sign up on such a site!

Ah, this confirms my suspicions.

While I believe in free trade there do need to be some regs to protect people from themselves and from predatory companies like this one. I say predatory because they are preying on base instinct and false hopes.

I think 95% of the population could be tempted to do something or another wrong given an appeal to the right instincts. Maybe 100%.

True, but it is their right, even if their intentions or morals are questionable. This reminds me of my high school days. Everyone was screwing around but the girls who got caught, usually by getting pregnant, were the sl**s

No, you are dead wrong. It's no different from the old days when people had penpals they wrote to all over the world.

Anyway, Ashley Madison is a site for people who want to cheat, not a dating web site. Big difference. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, since I know a few married couples who met on an internet dating site.

Now that I'm rereading your comment, you're talking about just having sex, not a relationship. Still, what else would a woman do, go to a bar? Attend a Sunday sermon? A lot of people try to safeguard their privacy by keeping their sexual encounters private.

By the way, your comment is very judgmental and a bit misogynistic. Did you say "Gee, he's so handsome & rich that he didn't need to use prostitutes?" when Charlie Sheen was listed as one of Heidi Fleiss' clients?

Look, I haven't fooled around since fire was discovered, so this isn't a case of the lady who doth protest too much, but people should stay out of their neighbors' business. I think cheating is disgraceful, but unless someone took pictures, we don't know what happened between 2 people who met on this site any more than what happens after a City-Data meetup.
