Today's report is consistent with a plateau forming. There was a nice drop in hospitalizations although there were 3 more deaths since yesterday.

Today's update from Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota & Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice
COVID-19 Patient Update
Includes hospitalized patients who are positive for COVID-19 and those cleared of infection but still hospitalized at SMH facilities.

Total COVID inpatients today: 203 (221 yesterday)
COVID patients in ICU: 27 (26 yesterday)
% Unvaccinated Inpatients*: 63% (updated weekly on Wednesdays)

* We categorize patients as “vaccinated” once they have received the required primary dose(s) of a COVID-19 vaccine and 2 weeks have passed since the final dose. At this time, we do not require that patients have booster doses to be categorized as fully vaccinated. An increase in break-through infections is expected as the Omicron variant spreads and immunity wanes among those who are high-risk and those who have not yet gotten a booster dose. COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots are still the most effective method in preventing severe illness and hospitalization.

COVID-19 Test Results
SMH positivity rate: 21% (22% for week ending Jan. 21, 2022)

Cumulative COVID-19 Cases:
Total number of patients treated since outbreak began.
Patient admissions: 5,722 (5,691 yesterday)
Patient deaths: 574 (571 yesterday)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Monday rescinded its authorization for Covid-19 monoclonal antibody treatments made by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly after those treatments proved ineffective against the omicron variant, over a month after some hospitals voluntarily decided to stop offering the drugs.

Because Regeneron’s REGEN-COV treatment and Eli Lilly’s bamlanivimab and etesevimab treatment are “highly unlikely to be active against the omicron variant,” which currently accounts for 99.5% of cases, they are no longer authorized by the FDA, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research director Dr. Patrizia Cavazzoni said in a statement.

The decision, made on the basis of new data, avoids exposing patients to side effects of the treatments, including potentially serious allergic reactions, Cavazzoni said.

Regeneron and Eli Lilly’s treatments may be re-authorized if a variant they’re effective against becomes common again, Cavazzoni said.
DeSantis, Ladapo condemn feds’ decision to stop sending COVID-19 antibody treatments

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/de...nts/ar-AAT7nlx

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo are condemning Monday's decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to halt the distribution of antibody treatments that have become central to the state's COVID response.

Despite all previous indications and warnings from the federal government that these drugs don’t work against Omicron, DeSantis has made it the main part of the state’s response to COVID-19, rejecting the prevailing wisdom of the national medical community.

Because of the FDA's decision Monday, appointments for more than 2,000 Floridians to receive this treatment were canceled Tuesday, the governor said. All monoclonal antibody treatment sites have been shut down, the Department of Health announced.

"DeSantis says his state may sue to keep using two Covid treatments after the FDA halted their use and said they simply don't work on omicron.

The drug manufacturers haven't objected; one even agreed. The AMA agrees. DeSantis objects."

See the article attached to this tweet to get the drug manufacters take on the FDA decision:

"As the DeSantis administration rails against the FDA decision to limit use of monoclonal antibody treatments made by Regeneron and Eli Lilly, worth noting both companies say they agree with the feds that these drugs aren’t effective against omicron.

Regeneron left, Lilly right"

As per this article that came out today (see below) - there are many reinfections with the Omicron variant. And as I've stated several times Florida doesn't include reinfections in their case count. That's why hospitalizations are a better metric of what's transpiring with Covid in Florida.

More than two-thirds of omicron cases are reinfections, English study suggests

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

Imperial College London's React study — which has been updated monthly since May 2020 and is funded by the U.K. government — analyzed 100,607 PCR test results from across England. Swabs were collected between Jan. 5 and Jan. 20.

The study found that 99% of sequenced positive swabs came from people infected with the omicron variant, with only 1% of infections being caused by the delta variant.

Two-thirds of the 3,582 participants who tested positive in January reported they had already tested positive for Covid in the past. A further 7.5% of infected participants said they suspected they had previously had the virus, but had not had this confirmed with a test.

When previous variants of Covid were circulating among populations, it was thought that a prior infection, in which people had caught the virus and recovered, could offer some protection from reinfection. But there is concern that this is not the case with omicron, with U.K. health officials estimating in December that the risk of reinfection with omicron is 5.4 times greater than it is with the delta variant.
