Absolutely not overrated in my opinion. I find it to be the most beautiful city/region in the entire country. Where else can you be looking at the city skyline and see two gorgeous, snow-capped mountain ranges, a giant volcano, and a large body of water all at once? Breathtaking is the best word I can think of.

I think there's a big disconnect between the city itself and the surrounding areas. This is a beautiful part of the world- lots of places have beautiful views and surroundings. As a city, Seattle is dirty and grungy with a side of ramshackle.

I think the Seattle area is very beautiful; as a city, it is no great architectural prize, but the surrounding are lovely.

Visually Washington and Seattle are beautiful cities compared to many other places. However, downtown still lacks soul. It's rather sad. Disagree with me? Go visit Vancouver BC, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Boston to name a few and you'll know what I mean.

Many of the other larger parks are similar strips of largely unusable land that aren't wide enough for a football field (Myrtle Edwards Park, Magnolia Park, Madison Park, etc.) Kerry Park is a good example of a typical over-hyped Seattle park - great views, but no larger than a single-home lot.
The Arboretum, Discovery Park, Lincoln Park in West Seattle are all very large parks. Also, Ravenna Park is very nice; it's narrow, but has a wonderful ambience through the length of it.

I have been to all of those places, but I think Seattle still has a soul. Seattle kind of reminds me of a small San Francisco. But Alki is amazing, nothing even close to that in SF.

True; West Seattle is a whole world that very few visitors are even aware of, and even some long-time residents of Seattle have never seen.

As someone who lives in West Seattle, I'm not unhappy about that!

Default Sea >sfo, imho

I live in SF, and perhaps I've grown blase by being here so many years... but I think Seattle is more beautiful... and part of the credit belongs to the rain, for making everything green.
Still, it's too bad that previous generations of leaders allowed the building of the viaduct, and the huge trench that contains I-5. The first mistake is being remedied; probably the other will never be. Disappointing, too, that buses will soon be evicted from the bus tunnel... but that's another subject.
