I thought I had heard many mentions of the waterfront "plan" or something that Seattle is going to be spending some nice dollars to clean up and develop the waterfront of downtown. I read the Seattle times online daily, but I haven't heard anything lately. Do you guys hear anything on the news about it? That would be great for a waterfront revamp (and maybe a little riff-raff reduction, too).

Thanks for the link!

I really hope this works out. It looks like a great plan.

It's just another tourist trap, so don't get too excited about it. It's just another excuse to increase property taxes.:dubious :

Funding is unknown at this point, the City wants to tax all homeowners, but they want the waterfront business district people to pay for it. The Port has pledges some funds, and there will likely be some state and/or federal funds, but this is all to be done after the removal of the viaduct and new tunnel. Part if it is the replacement of the deteriorating seawall. What is mostly in doubt at this point is the elaborate amenities, such as landscaping, art, parks and other public places. There will likely be a boom in construction as views open post viaduct, and those existing condos and apartments with blocked views now will increase dramatically in value. With my waterfront office, I look forward to the results but the next few years will be a horrible mess getting to work and back.

I heard there were problems with the Alaskan Way. I think it must be 100 years old or something. Is it finally going to be demolished and replaced with some other traffic solution? Kind of an icon on the waterfront, but after what happened in Northridge and with the Oakland Bay Bridge during earthquakes, that double decker looks a bit like a catastrophe waiting to happen.

Part of the viaduct is already demolished with plans for more demolition later on. I don't think it's actually 100 years old, but definitely looks and feels it. There's going to be a tunnel by-pass instead.

The viaduct dates back to something like 1953. The problem with the design is that the NY designer they hired doesn't want to incorporate some things that a lot of people want ( like the Waterfront Streetcar) and a lot of it is "pie in the sky" lovely, almost extravagant stuff that somebody's got to pay for.

I'd want a waterfront monorail. Too bad Seattle settled for that one little monorail.
