I've been to the Central district and there certainly is gangs, however, it's a relatively safe area. The gangs seem to kill one another and every now and again take down an innocent bystander in the crossfire. Not much worse than the innocent bystanders gunned down by the police in the latest shooting in Manhattan. At least they are not targeting non gang-members like they would in cities like Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston , etc. Seattle is a very mixed and integrated city, hence why you hear more about gangs, even though the city has quite a bit less. I did walk by a memorial of someone who was shot to death on Cherry St in a drive by shooting. He was an innocent bystander standing too close to the targeted gang member.

There are gangs in Seattle and the fact it is a relatively safe city, lacking segregated ghettos, is why your average Joe has more exposure to the gang violence then people living in Los Angeles, where they would never live so close to any gang activity. I mean who in there right mind would go and hang out in Compton or Watts? Whereas, Central District is relatively safe and is becoming an upcoming hipster/artsy neighborhood.

I remember Northeast Portland about 15 years ago, if you were white skin you didn't go down there. There was gangbangers rolling up and down the street and people hanging out of their houses drinking 40s. You would see a lot of crackhouses operating. However, I have seen the NE and Northside of Portland improving quite a bit in the last decade and those areas that were once condemned have become very safe, upscale, artsy, trendy and now lacking any gang activity. The Central District to me feels like the way Inner NE Portland was about 8 years ago. It is improving and I think it will continue to improve.

Anybody, who says you don't leave your house if your not in a gang, when walking in the Central District, is full of it. I see girls walking alone with their purses at night in the Central District. That usually is an indicator of how dangerous an area is to me. I would never have seen that in NE Portland 15 years ago or in almost any part of Los Angeles.

I have been here 20 years, and before that worked in Oakland, and I thank the OP for this thread, it gave me a lot of laughs.
