What options are there in the Seattle metro area besides Microsoft? How good are they? I am sure there are body-shop IT companies who staff Microsoft but I am really asking for other high-tech companies?

A related question - how is the startup scene in the Seattle area? Does it compare with the San Fran or Bay Area?

Google, for one, is growing here:

Google WA Jobs

I can't remember the last IPO here, although then again they dried up completely last quarter in the Bay Area also. This blog can be a good read on venture capital, startups, etc. Overall, I'm guessing that the level of startup activity in the Seattle region is far less than in Silicon Valley, but more than most other places.

Hey, been in the industry for about 12 years now. The startup scene here is nowhere near what it was in 2000 (that's probably a good thing). There are a ton of newer companies however. Mobile media is really big here (ringtones, games, sms delivery, etc). If you're a Java developer, there's infinite work (or at least it seems that way).
