I don't have a car, and I live about a mile from downtown. Taking a cab from the airport cost me 42 dollars, and I am about to go to the airport again for the holidays (roundtrip = $90 with tip). is there a better (cheaper) way to get to and from the airport, aside from the bus?

Ask a friend to drive you there. Offer to pay for the gas. And maybe buy them a delicious sandwich or something. I bet it is cheaper than $42 bucks.

My wife took
Shuttle Express Seatac Airport Shuttle Seattle - Limo Service - Shuttle Service - Airport Transportation - Town Car (http://www.shuttleexpress.com/index.html - broken link)
Shuttle Express Airport Transfers (http://www.shuttleexpress.com/airportTransfers.html - broken link)

and said it was nice. They have coffee inside the van. I think it was $70, though...and that was over a year ago.
Compare that to a cab ride from my house which runs about ~60 bucks + tip. Next time, I'm taking the van.

What about taking the taxi to a bus stop and the bus to the airport? I am not familiar with the transit system but hopefully someone could help you if this is a good option.

If you don't have a whole lot of luggage two buses run from downtown to the airport from the bus tunnel during the day and 2nd ave during non-tunnel hours, 174 & 194. I recommend the 194, due to that it is quicker, although both buses run about every half hour through the day and the fair will be $1.50 each way. Hope this helps.

I think there's bus service directly from hotels to the airport which would be cheaper than taxi and shuttle express but more than city bus.

I think you're referring to the Downtown Airporter, which is $10 or $11, I believe. A good choice if you're staying at a downtown hotel (or live close to that one).
