Oh, isn't that totally ridiculous? So much for thinking that the people in higher positions here have integrity.
The ONLY positive I can say about it is that they DID build the bridge to nowhere. Sarah took the $$ for it, but never built it. Well, not sure which was the wiser one there.
I rarely get mad about things... I consider myself a laid back person...but some things get me irked.
This is a very remote location, and even the landowner said the bridge isn't needed. That and DOT officials canceled their interviews with Karla, the Rapid City reporter for Keloland.
The money would have been better used in many other areas. It could have used to put a layer of blacktop on I-29 between 41st St and Tea exits to provide a smooth surface until the DOT works on this stretch three to five years down the road (my guess). The DOT is doing studies and will have to finish their studies before they do anything with this stretch. Who knows when they will get around to it, a lot of it depends on money. If McCain gets elected, good luck with getting the road fixed within the next five years, ha ha. It would get finished sooner with an Obama administration. Enough with my political soapbox. This stretch of road is riddled with roughness, bumps, and potholes and needs to be replaced and widened similar to that of I-29 north of 26th St. I was on it tonight and get annoyed with the stretch.
I have thought that the South Dakota government was a much more effecient apparatus than the Federal government (living with a balanced budget and has been a lean unit in the past), but the bridge to nowhere mentioned is one instance that defies this preconceived notion.
Don't worry Chris. South Dakota will fix that road sooner or later.
They've finally started working on the "S" curve on I-90 out in Summerset/Piedmont. It only took 15 years and hundreds of car accidents before they decided to do it!
There have been a couple times where I almost got into a car accident on that stretch and the previously mentioned stretch is downright dangerous when it gets icy. I slid into the median with my 1989 Chevy Cavalier when I was going from Sioux Falls to Vermillion on election night of 2000. Even at that time, that stretch was starting to get dangerous for the traffic volumes that use it.
I am not one to riot neither but felt that I should convey my point to the DOT. I have been to one of their informative meeting and expressed my concern over that strech and support for them to fix, improve, widen the strech of road. Those who were there were understanding, but they are limited in what they can do with monetary resources being finite. I will have to attend more meetings and show additional support for improvements. If I and enough people speak up, that will help. The money situtation now limiting when this can get built and the red tape that has to go through the federal transporation agency pushes the project back some.
I agree, Chris
But I question why this stupid bridge is being upgraded? I'm not an economist, and I don't know the state's budget, but couldn't this 700,000 dollars be used some other way?
