We should land on it and blow it up and become heroes like in that movie!

Thanks for the link Brian! Here's another discussing the same object. The asteroid is about 1,837 feet (560 meters) across and could cause widespread devastation in the year 2182 if it hits the Earth. That's not to say it would cause global extinction, but it could be an extremely nasty collision.

Chance of an impact is 1 in 1000 if nothing is done. While 2182 is a while off in the future, it's thought a realistic opportunity for deflection is possible before 2080, and more easily if deflected before 2060. After the 2080 window, it won't be so easy.

Quote:
"The consequence of this complex dynamic is not just the likelihood of a comparatively large impact, but also that a realistic deflection procedure (path deviation) could only be made before the impact in 2080, and more easily, before 2060," Sansaturio said in a statement.

A "remote area" might be considered an ocean. That could cause a wee tsunami.

Since 70% of the earth surface is covered in ocean, I'd say your prediction has a 70% chance of being right.

THANKYOU for the link....I was not aware of this possible impactor....only Apophis.....which very soon(2029) will pass possibly below geosynchronous orbit(about 25,000 miles).. ...in essence between Earth and our GPS satellite system...too close for my comfort.

What may be scaring you is that when you hear of one passing close, you think there is a reasonable chance it could impact Earth. The key word is REASONABLE.

Distance from Earth to Moon - 238857 miles -round it to 240,000

Area covered within moon's orbit - (Pi R squared) 181,000,000,000 square miles

Earth's diameter - 7926.28 miles

Area of the circle described by Earth 50,000,000 square miles

3620 to 1 chance that anything that gets within the orbit of the Moon misses Earth.
What are the odds of it hitting the moon. That would sure be handy...

Bottom line is still that there is a better chance of an asteroid impact than of perishing in a plane crash....still it will happen...be it tomorrow or possibly decades from now with Apophis....we are far from safe, since during flyby in 2029 it's orbit will be changed and may increase it's chance of impact on subsequent orbits.

Evacuate the Planet and go where? Hollywood movies are not realistic. If earth were to get hit and the impact would be strong enough to wipe out all life, then I want to be a part of it. Much rather then sit inside some space ship and be lost in space.

I agree.......The logistics would not be realistic even with "STAR TREK" type technology. Also I'm not sure I'd like getting stuck in space and LOST IN SPACE with Dr. Smith either....LOL......
