Bugs & Critters in Southern Utah (Layton, St. George: scorpion, live, legal)

We also have lots of benign things like crickets, potato bugs, and earwigs.

We are 3 months old to the area, relocating from the Pac NW. We built a home and had Dixie Pest come out before moving in to spray. They come back about every other month and do inside and out. Seen cockroaches (dead) outside, lots of crickets outside and those that get close to the house end up dead because of spraying, had one dead scorpion in garage (pale colored one) and when we were out biking on Brigham road, up near the school bus gas station, we saw a dead Tarantula. That was creepy. They rarely get near homes so I wouldn't fret about those. We were told we could see a scorpion once in a while but if you keep up with spraying and use common sense (never leave shoes out for them to get into), you should be fine.

I see you relocated from Pacific NW. Can I ask what made you chose St. George. We are in Albany, OR and getting a little tired of the rain. I know, what do you expect in OR! Thinking of St. George or Cedar City. How do you like the big difference in weather?

I needed a warmer climate for my health. We knew a couple who lived here so researched it, then came down for a weekend and explored. We found this to be the perfect area for us.
We find everyone to be extremely nice, the area is clean and the weather is gorgeous. Yes, it can get warm during the summer but we weren't bothered too much by the over 100 degree weather. You just do things at certain times.
One thing to note, 100 degrees here is a lot different than 100 degrees in PacNW. A LOT!! It's unbearable up there. So much to do here. You have no excuse not to stay busy down here.
We found home prices to be lower, property taxes and insurance was lower also. Feel free to ask if other questions.

This area was already home to the Indians that the so called settlers massacred and pushed out. Well before the mormon church brought their silly fairytale here the people and the bugs got along just fine. You leave, go back to wherever your ancestors came from. That didn't feel nice, did it? So instead of being *******s to each other why don't we enjoy this place together and figure out how to feel safe and comfy in our homes. Mkay.

Excuse me, but my response was specifically directed to an individual who had nothing whatsoever to say about bugs in Utah. He made no attempt to actually address the question posted the OP. Instead, he used the forum as a soapbox from which he made a needlessly derogatory comment about living in a Mormon surrounded by "pesky critters" called Mormons who "hang around his house." Given his insensitive, juvenile remark, I said nothing requiring an apology.

These comments have been great but besides the black bug, roach, scorpion & ant issues in the St. George area, how often are snakes seen? Do they get inside homes? Do you have to constantly worry about them on your patios?

I saw three rattlesnakes while living in St. George, but they were out on the hiking trails, south of Santa Clara, and then twice in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. Never saw any snakes in city proper, or heard of anyone having a snake encounter on their property. Though I suppose it has happened. Short answer- no, you don't have to worry about it.
