SU is all about basketball. Can't even compare the football program. SU basketball is a legitimate conference title threat every year, national champion threat not infrequently. Even a bad year means twice as many wins as losses. Other than Carmelo Anthony, there's been a few good players to in the last 10 years who played in the NBA: Derrick Coleman (nba all-star, rookie of the year), Sherman Douglas (starting point guard for 12 seasons), Rony Seikaly (career average of 15 points and 10 rebounds; holds Miami Heat records for most blocks and most rebounds in a game). Not at football level maybe but then again, it says a lot about Boeheim, for better or worse, and the zone defense. Syracuse bball players don't know how to defend man on man but they can shoot the lights out - John Wallace is perfect recent example of that.
And winters are not long in Madison, Wis or Michigan, or Minnesota? ’
Yes they sure are but WI, MN and MI are great world class universites
alive and vibrating like a tuning fork.
SYR is a second tier C+ school in a declining area of a declining city
losing much of its appeal to its primarly LI underacheiving clientele.
No but rich kids from LI pay the bills.High tuition allows them to imagine
they are at a great U like their siblings at Brown,Columbia or Wisconsin
who actually did their homework.
Also the buisness plan at Miami,USC ,Vermont etc.
They have been getting some players from Upstate, Maryland/DC area, PA, some FL guys, a few New England region players and a few players from places out West and the Midwest.
I've heard people say that the difference is that Syracuse used to draw from the entire tri-state area, including New Jersey (heavily). As Rutgers and others have improved, Syracuse is left with less of a talent pool to draw from. It's hard running a football program in the Northeast with all the focus the area on basketball relative to other sports. If you can't draw from a wider area, you have problems.
As for the cold weather, it's just an excuse. The Dome has drawn more recruits here than the cold weather ever scared away, at least for basketball. If they're from the Northeast they already know what cold weather is like, and most students like to stay somewhat close to home.
if we did we would have Knowshon Moreno replacing Ray Rice right now, and our OLine would have more depth
Our backfield would have malcolm jenkins, myron rolle, michael ray garvin
In other words they would not have lost to UNC at home
