Have you actually held the monochrome Kindle or Nook? Reading on either device is NOTHING like reading on a color tablet. It's a completely different ... and better... experience. This is why the Kindle/Nook took off like they did. It's superior to reading on a color device like a tablet or a laptop.

And the Nook color is actually quite a formidable tablet... especally if you are into hacking it.

Default We seem to have a lot of experts here...

I have no problem considering myself a very sharp tack when it comes to large-scale computer networks, but I've let my skills detoriate as regards those computer devices people like to plug into the network.

So: I'm looking for a reader that'll let me read thousand-page PDF files (Cisco manuals and design guides, that kind of thing) with easy search (important) and bookmark functions. As I'll probably break it before wearing it out, it being fairly cheap would be a plus. Black and white would be OK.

What reader does this best?

I would say in this regard both the B&W Kindle and Nook are equal on this task.
