I have to agree with you there, that magical feeling when you first move here is pretty nice. The key is finding a way to hold on to it. It's pretty much gone for me too.

Didn't count on the drivers being out of control; it's a sign of poor leadership by the politicians.
Hmm where do you live? I'm in brandon and everyone here is pretty jerk-ish. Now, I'm not expecting special treatment because i'm pregnant, but i've had men clearly see me coming and refuse to keep a door held open for me or things like that. How rude.

I was surprised that the cost of living is so low, for such a beautiful place.

Surpised at how low salaries were and how poor the medical benefits were for most jobs; surprised at how polite most people who interviewed me were; surprised at how liberal the newspapers were; surprised at how many homeless there were; surprised at how very much I missed FL when it left it for a high paying job up north.

Where in NY were you?

I ask because I'm starting to wonder, after reading many people stating how different the COL is here, whether it is more of a comparison between rural and urban COL, rather than different states overall.

We moved last year from Michigan. We lived in the city. Food was just about exactly the same as it is here. Gas is cheaper here. Utilities are cheaper.... we paid about $350/month in the winter for heat up north, plus electricity, tacking on at least $80 more in the winter. So, given that my highest electric bills this summer have been just under $300 and there is no gas to add to that, it's significantly less. Rent seems to be about the same, homes sell for less here. After switching car insurance companies, we pay less now than up north. I'm certain homeowners insurance is more down here. So, comparing all of that, it seems about the same as where I was.

Anyway, this might be a topic for a new thread, but I'm curious.

This surprises me too! Either the people in Mi are VERY rude (possible!) and people are a bit less rude here (??), or I am super lucky to find the friendly ones when I go out, or people are friendly here.
