We have plenty of trees, I guess I could say dense in some parts, around this area. If you're familiar with 4th St N around 275 you'll know what I'm talking about. The bay is a 1/2 mile from my house too.

I was trying to figure out why pools in Florida have screened enclosures. Is it to keep the bugs out and if so are the spaces in the screens close enough to keep these particular bugs out?

it does depend on the neighborhood and where you live. I have actually never noticed them in Tampa or St Pete. If you go out to the burbs they are pretty bad, especially near water.

The screen enclosure won't keep all the bugs out but it does help. No-see-ums are found more where there are woods and water.

The pool enclosure will keep out the palmetto bugs though

Florida living = sunscreen and bug repellent. There's always a price to pay for sunshine. :-)

Easy way to keep them off you - oil! Use baby oil or other type of oil on your skin and you can feel them if they hit you but they can't bite. They can't get through it. Also use a fan to keep them of you when you're sitting outside. They can't fly into the wind

no see ems, biting midges or gnats. They are a pain skin so soft kind of keeps them away. What ever you do don't start itching them, the bites will last a while especially if you break the skin. I keep alcohol pads or a bottle around for with cotton balls after 15 minutes they are gone. This really works mosquito bites also.
