My family goes to Dr. VanOverbeke in the Town and Country area of Tampa off of Hanley Road. They are not a chain. It is not extremely close to where I live, but we have been going to them for many years and they are excellent. I've referred several friends there that have had some major dental work done that like them as well.

I went to Great Expressions dental center in Riverview 301&Big Bend. They are a greedy office that does bad work. They really ruined teeth and now I am going to loose them and have to pay for implants on top of the thousands of dollars already spent. On top of that, they refuse to give me the files I have requested of my teeth prior to the bridge and crown work. If you don't want to have problems, don't go there, they have no morals when it comes to honoring their work.

I go to Dr Charles Martin down in south tampa. He's on Mac Dill across from that big country club. I found him after a recommendation for someone to go to for veneers and ended up having them done there; he really knows what he's doing and the rest of the staff have been great too over the past few years for just the regular stuff.

ANYWAY
If anyone works in a dental office----I just moved here and went to a chain and they wouldn't give me the regular cleaning I HAD to get the deep cleaning/scaling and a bunch of other crap basically I just didn't believe. I always go to the dentist but have just moved to Florida and find out you have to have the exam before the teeth cleaning. Double dipping on the copays or pays for sure.
I don't care if I really do need that scaling I don't want to put myself in debt just to clean my teeth. I have read on the Internet Florida dentists say don't clean if you need scaling because it just pushes the germs in the gums. I would buy that a little more if it wasn't a common practice in virtually every other state.
Basically I don't want to go to dentist after dentist pay for an exam and then be told they won't do a basic cleaning. OF COURSE you need the scaling...it's like asking a used car salesman if you need a new car.
How would you phrase this inquiry when trying to pick a new dental office.
The last one cost me 75 bucks after I walked out because I didn't accept their offer of almost 5 grand worth of work when I had been to the dentist in my old state less than six months ago and everything was fine.
Sorry to break it to you but if the dentist says you need a scaling, it's not actually a cleaning - it means you have a chronic infection in your gums (periodontal disease). A regular "cleaning" will do nothing for you. Any dentist who allows you to get a regular cleaning when you have periodontal disease is taking your money (not the other way around). The reason the dentist wants to examine you first is to check for infections and cavities so you don't end up in pain or losing a tooth because all the hygienist did was a regular cleaning.

The dentist should be able to explain it this to you. Maybe get a second opinion to be sure. Good luck!
