Sorry, but 15% will continue to be acceptable to me. Prices keep rising, so 15% of the new price is more than 15% of the old price.

Now back to the topic at hand...servers are customers too...for those putting down servers and ranting about how they don't deserve to be tipped properly and who gives a $hite about them anyway, well these workers spend their money in many businesses that are owned by people like you, treat people with respect and you will receive it in return, treat them like $hite and *well* you will also receive that in return...You just never know who may be serving you, it could be a "Big Client's" son, daughter, friend or relative...

Nobody has advocated treating servers improperly or not tipping them appropriately. The issue is with what defines an appropriate tip.

Too bad there is not a poll with this thread. I'd be curious to see how the tip percentage breaks down here.

Yes it is. What you are saying is 100% FALSE!!

Read this from my earlier posts:

When prices go up, servers get raises in their tips by even if a person always tips 15%, the tip they receive will go up even if they always get the same things, the same ways. For example, in 2005, our Chili's had baby back ribs(a full rack) for $13.49(I use to get them a lot back then, somehow I remember what they were priced at), now they are $17.49.). So let's say the customer dining alone with getting a water, their bill is with taxes $19.02 now, but back then getting the same thing is $14.67, so the tip on 15% was back then $2.20, but now is $2.85. That isn't much, but some people will either give that exact amount, but most will just round, such as $3, but back then the customer may have rounded down to the nearest dollar, making the server make $2. So the server may make a dollar more per table thereabouts since 2005 on that item.

The server makes more because of the price INCREASES. The higher the bill, the higher the tip, even if you tip 15%. 15% of $50 is $7.50. $52(let's say the customer had bought 2 baby back rib entrees(rounding not including taxes and other things as well), the tip is $7.80. If the customer gives exactly 15%, the server just made 30 cents PROFIT off of the higher prices($17.49 ribs compared to the $13.49 ribs price back in 2005).

Of course it is. Prices have risen over the years, not fallen. There aren't many restaurants out there that are actually lowering their prices (discounts and specials excluded, which should not be considered for tipping), so tips have been going up with the increased check amounts.

I can understand the old guy's logic on this one. Had you given him $30, i'm sure he would have been back to give you your "change" and to collect his tip.

This is just reality. I dont care, and newsflash: neither does anyone else.
+1

It's not the public's responsibility to ensure wait staff is fairly compensated. Do a good job and you'll receive a great tip from me. Can't speak for others. If this wage volatility bothers you, find a new low-skill profession. I couldn't care less.

Have you read the entire thread?? It's pretty clear to me that some of the posters on here would be total obnoxious jerks to a server and feel that it's appropriate and well deserved to not only treat them like $hite, but to not leave a tip or an inappropriate tip...

BTW: An appropriate tip should begin at at least 18% and go up accordingly for good to great service...if you are receiving poor service SPEAK UP!
