Those signs are fake; they're only there so people "think" the jobs are available when in fact they are not. It's facade.
The interview process is to learn about the candidate, their attitude, their goals, whether or not they are a team player. Sounds like you simply did not measure up.

Yes there are jobs that just pay regular min wage only like the ones selling clothes but for high end products like shoes and purses and jewelry it also commission. Except stores like Walmart and Kmart and target and SAMs they all pay low wages not enough to live on and all part time.
Sears has been a part time company for a long time. Nordstroms, Publix, Hot Topic, Radio Shack use a full time staff for most positions as well as Crate & Barrel, McDonalds. Sure, the pay is low but the skills, knowledge and required abilities for the jobs are low as well.

Like you are the one to determine that because you know me so well? I don't think personal attacks are allowed on CD! Maybe you want to read the terms & conditions.

The people saying there are tons of retail jobs here are the people who haven't applied to a retail job in a decade+. Yes, there are signs "everywhere" (about four storefronts in the mall), and there are a few hundred people all applying for said jobs. As a student, I've been looking for a weekend gig for about a year now. I have an on campus job, but there's very few hours and it's closed holidays, weekends, etc.

And yes, the companies with "now hiring" signs up are stock piling for seasonal positions. They start hiring around September and it will end in January/February. Don't believe companies do this? Go to snag a job, look up Toys R Us, apply, wait to see if you get a call back (or call them and follow up if you feel like weeks of aggravation, I wont judge). then go back six months later and see if they're still "hiring." Then six months after that. Then six months after that. There are a few companies who do this, but TRU is the easiest to spot (for me).

To give you an idea of how competitive it is, I've worked four years doing backroom work at a few places, and I worked for a video store for close to three years. I can't get hired at a retail shop (my schedule probably doesn't help), and I got denied for a job at MovieStop.

It's not a personal attack. I stated what interviews are for and you did not get hired for a reason.

This article in the paper here today:

Are there enough people to fill retail jobs in Manatee-Sarasota? | Retail | Bradenton Herald

This area (Bradenton/Sarasota) is BOOMING with retail, and there is a shortage of people to fill the jobs. Some of these are higher paying, too.

It seems some of you need to take off your tin foil hats.

Fake job postings? if you read the article it states that new venues are opening. Here in Hernando County
there are several projects going on which are going to be retail shopping centers. Who is going to staff these stores? Phantoms? The current construction would be in addition to all the construction we have seen here in the past few years.

Wages:
i would assume the going rate for a retail clerk is around $12.00 an hour. I see some complain that it is not a "living wage". Do people think retail clerks should earn $20-$25 an hour? The fast food workers want $15 an hour. Where does it stop?

According to the US Census Bureau persons with doctorates in the United States had an average income of roughly $81,400. The average for an advanced degree was $72,824 with men averaging $90,761 and women averaging $50,756 annually. The Social Security Administration has the average annual wage in the United States for 2012 as $44,321.

If you want to reach the average annual wage you need to have average skills. Obviously arranging clothes on a rack or display, assisting a customer with a purchase, and other general duties of a retail
clerk require little or no skill. Same for the fast food worker. Its a job that anyone can do. ANYONE.
It is a totally repetitive unchanging system.

Fast food workers, retail workers, and other lower paying jobs are necessary in our world. Those jobs have historically filled by young people starting out in the work world. They were not there to support a family of 4 with 2 cars, 300 channel cable tv packages, laptops, Kindles, smartphones, $160 a month "whole family" cell phone plans, $250 purses, etc. In the not so distant past many things available today did not exist. That means life can be lived with out them.

People have been trained to be consumers and consume much more than many can afford. It is up to the individual to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to peform jobs that require higher function and then they should see an increase in their salaries and with that their style of living increases as well.

If you cant live on $20k a year, get a partner making $20k a year and now you have a household income of $40k a year. If that isnt enough one or both partners can get part time work to further increase the household income. This system has seemed to work well for a very long time.

So, instead of complaining that hundreds of new jobs are going to become available but they dont pay enough look at the other side of the coin. A job is better than no job.

People need to get back to reality instead of trying to keep up with we are told we need to have.

Why ? Data mining for available pools of known candidates easily accessible, by scanning their own loaded online candidate profiles, and/or their scanned resumes.

Some of the biggest offender of posting non exisitent (current) jobs are banks.

Some of the biggest employers in the us also get huge tax credits for documented job expansion and hr development, under the tax code - they allege they are expanding and staffing, get the tax credit, then conveniently "unpost" the "job", or legally claim they no longer have that position.

In short, it's somewhat of a scam, that is laid upon unsuspecting job seekers, with the knowledge and help of the federal and state government.

Some of the biggest banks are offenders : Jp morgan chase, bank of america, fifth third, suntrust, regions, jc penney, sears/kmart, etc etc. City and county governments don't play that game because of no federal tax benefit goes to them.

So, in support of another poster claiming there are fake jobs that are so-called "advertised", the poster is somewhat correct.

Sometimes these non-existent phantom jobs are repeated as "open jobs" on multiple job boards, over and over and over again, giving the illusion of a busy hiring climate for many available and open and real jobs.......not so, not by a longshot.
