... they are tripling the population of downtown Houston in a matter of 3 or so years. if thats not "amazing rapid change" then idk what is. there is currently over 1.5 million sq feet of office space U/C, almost 1,300 residential units U/C, 2 light rail lines U/C, and 1540 hotel rooms U/C right now, with much more planned.

(forgive me if its not okay to post this web page on here. i dont believe it is "copyrighted" or anything..? mods can remove the link if so.)

I gotta say, both Houston and Dallas are improving...

Thing is, Houston is improving their downtown, while for Dallas, it's really UPtown that's getting better faster than downtown.

Dallas's action is not inside Downtown but its' Uptown side. The strategic thing Dallas has done is bridged the gap with the construction of KW park, causing a spillover effect between DTD and UTD. Houston has been and continues to be stronger in the development of its actual downtown core, it's just unfortunately gotten a later start than Dallas with a plan to intermingle it with its surrounding neighborhoods.

I agree, Houston downtown is about to blow up. While it edges Dallas DT at the moment, it's about to extend that gap further.

err... lol, mind explaining your reasoning?

how is Houston lower than Dallas in current living & working, how does Dallas jump ahead of Austin in future living & working, and how does Dallas jump ahead of Houston and Ft Worth in terms of future recreation & tourism? (also, what recreation and tourism is there exactly in Ft Worth that deems it better than Houston and its numerous attractions?)

Seems like your main focus is on my Houston rankings. So I'll start there.

The main reason for the lower rankings is, I just don't find it as interesting compared to the other cities. DT Houston has few historic low to mid-rise building clusters. It's dominated by glass towers and is a extremely difficult place for me to connect with. Little ambiance or character, few areas (if any) with true historic charm. Houston's street-level is also lacking compared to the others.

It's not like Dallas or Fort Worth are like Boston, but they do have sections (mainly in Dallas) in their DT's with the low and mid-rise buildings within the type of historic areas that I appreciate.

It is a plus that Houston has a MLB stadium DT though.

There seems to be little information on the growth in Downtown Dallas in this thread. All the neighborhoods surrounding downtown are growing, not just Uptown. For people not familiar with the area it's easy to assume that it's Uptown that is seeing all the growth due to the fact that it has been the hottest in the past decades.

Truth is all areas are growing. The only area still lagging behind is the Cedars area. Farmers Market in the south has been booming. Deep Ellum and the rest of the east side are building residential after residential. Arts District is hot and so is West Dallas, Design District, CityPlace, and Victory. The West End is booming and building residentials as well and is the one that has that supertall proposal by Perot and the South Asian Museum planned. Downtown itself has so many residential conversions that it's hard to keep count. There is a reason why they are proposing those 70 story towers. Downtown Dallas has got it going.
