I thought you meant "South" EAST Texas, in which case I'd agree with you!

Hmm, rural northeast Texas, 95% white in a population of 2,000? Racism, you say? NO WAY!

I tend to want to side with tstone on this one.

"Racism still exists in Texas." What a blinding revelation! Did someone deny it doesn't? Does it not exist anywhere else on earth? Is it something new in the world, or something that always has and always will be with us? Is it limited to whites? Or can other "races" be "racist" as well? And what is "racism" anyway? Is it the dictionary definition...or (as is very often the case) one of those "Through the Looking Glass" words that mean "just what I want it to mean."

And are Jasper and Vidor and the participants a representative sample of Texas and Texans?

Sorry, but sometimes the subject of "racism" leaves a lot to be desired when being discussed. And part of the reason is that much of the time it is an opportunity to proclaim victimhood, take advantage for personal reasons (ala' Sharpton and Jackson), or for others to breast-beat and proclaim their moral superiority by seeing it in every aspect of life.

I stopped in Vidor once on the way from New Orleans to Houston; my friend and I wanted to see if it was true that there weren't any black people there. We went to several places...mostly gas stations and fast food places, since they were the only places open...and we didn't see a single one. It was weird and we felt uncomfortable. (We're white.)

What's weird is looking for that. What were you planning to do if you saw "one"? Would that have made you feel comfortable?

Good point, Laura. Interesting, too, that the search encompassed fast food joints and gas stations. Perhaps the African-Americans were at quality restaurants.

I hope you don't miss the opportunity to get back to nature in some of these awesome states for a vacation or three. It would be a shame if you stayed away just because it makes you feel uncomfortable you likely won't see any black people here!
