Austin isn't awesome. But it's a good place to raise a family if you're west of Mopac. And it's a nice place to recreate ...especially areas near & between Town Lake & L. Travis (at least when there isn't some stupid national festival going on). Actually, Austin is pretty much like Dallas & Houston, only smaller...& maybe a little better, except there's too many GrapeNut Californians moving here...so maybe we're not a little better.

But Real estate is getting overpriced & THIS development is getting worse. So those without a job & those who use the word "gush" in a sentence, & those who want to turn Austin even MORE Socialist, Please don't move here.

I don't bash other cities.

I've lived in Austin and have visited San Antonio more times than I can count. I wouldn't live in either city, but that doesn't mean I think they suck.

I don't even know enough about Houston to bash it. I can count on one hand the number of times I've visited it. I really have no opinion of the place other than it's big (duh) and its layout is weird (due to its lack of zoning).

Not when I drive on it.

But then again I (& 90% of all austinites) don't use it to commute....& avoid it when it makes sense to avoid it.

But perhaps it's a parking lot when you are on it? (& this is who's fault?)

I'm going to never visit Houston again because of I 10. The fact that I'm never ON I 10.... doesn't change the fact that Houston is an awful city because of I 10.

(note - I grew up in Htown, love the restaurants, love the museums, love the cheap hotels on weekends & avoid crowded freeways when it makes sense to.)

The worst Houston bashing in Texas is from Baby Boomer Austinites that grew up in Houston and had some generation gap conflict with their parents that they are still working out. They are angry that Houston represents their parents strength and prosperity that kept them from ever being able to defeat their fathers and satisfying their Oedipal Complexes.

The bashing coming from Dallas is much more like sibling rivalry. The role of little brother being played by Dallas of course...

I'm a baby boomer Austinite who grew up in Houston (lived there from 69 - 92). Parents have died of old age, but honestly I think we got along pretty well as they were nice people. Visited Houston 6-8 times a year (for 15 years) when they were alive & always liked Houston. Even now, I visit Houston 3-5 times a year & like it. (don't miss the humidity in the summer though.... & some of my old stomping grounds have been affected by post Katrina in undesirable ways)

I said the "worst" Houston bashing. I think maybe you slipped there by thinking I was directly speaking of you. I think the worst attitudes in Austin towards Houston from Baby Boomers are generational in nature. Houston , especially in the years you lived here was very much dominated by the Depression era or as some people call it the "Greatest Generation" of people (GHW Bush's generation). Of course one could make an argument that any college town has this quality to some extent and kids will many time try to separate themselves and exert their independence by bashing the symbols of their parents making, such as the city that their parents are part of.

How ironic this article is... compared to the majority of you in this forum that debate over Austin, Houston and Dallas.

You can party in San Antonio without ever going to Austin. Besides that, I doubt parting would be the first thing on millinnials minds who are raising a family. Once you hit 30 those days are pretty much over & done with. Every once in awhile is ok, but the every weekend thing in your 20's gets old quick.
