To those of you who move to Texas but won't change your plates:
You want cheap housing, good jobs, no state income tax, tons of shopping, etc. etc. etc., but you aren't willing to pony up the 100 bucks a year that pays for the roads you want to drive on. You also drive on the toll roads without paying tolls. Why?

:?

Perhaps they are only there seasonally and are not required to change their information.
It is no different than those who travel through other states, they don't pay for the use of those roads.

What?? Are you telling me that all these people that I see in my neighborhood and my job that have the same out of state plates for years, many of them being expired, are just seasonal? No, I think not. To be completely honest, the police won't do anything about it, but it's still really uncool.

Legally, they are to change their license and plates within 30 days.

Yes, they are supposed to, but they don't. One person told me quote: I ain't getting a front plate.
This is an unrealistic statement. Once again, if you want to live in any state you should assimilate.

I cant wait to get Texas plates on my truck and get rid of the WA state ones. $100 a year... is that for every vehicle or does it vary, what about inspection or emission's?

DMV.org. I could try to explain it all but I'm not even going to try. From what I gather I think it's $50.75 + fees based on the cost and age of a car or 54 + fees based the weight of a truck, plus 25.50 for inspection. Don't quote me on this. I've always been a Texan so I don't know exactly what "new" Texans have to do. It really won't be very difficult.

Maybe some don't like the dull look of the Texas plate and don't wish to pay extra for the already expensive specialty plate.

52.75 (base fee) + whatever fee your county may add + sales tax which could be up to $90 (or the difference between your previous state's sales tax and the Texas sales tax) is pretty costly compared to other states.

I know this will rub most Texans the wrong way but I would be in favor of paying a small income tax (.5-2%) if it meant driving on smooth leveled roads and improving the overall infrastructure of TX roads. The only time I get to experience such smoothness is when I’m on the toll roads. And half of those aren’t up to par.

So someone told me that if you move to Texas from out of state and don't get a Texas drivers license as well as Texas plates you are still considered to be a resident of your old state. Therefore have to pay taxes affiliated with old the old state.
