No, UT most definitely does not have the same reputation as Harvard in Texas. That is silly.

How would you know?

One thing I haven't seen here is the network of UT exes. If you graduate from there, you will be running into plenty of Longhorns who may be willing to open doors for you. That's one advantage UT has over Harvard. The same is true of Texas A&M.

Side note: When I was a hiring manager I loved hiring Aggies. Thanks to their esprit de corps, they generally held up in stressful entry level positions (when they were right out of college) and they tended to whine less. When all other things were equal, I'd hire the Aggie over the non-Aggie. Worked 95% of the time. Of course, in the field I was in at that time, the type of degree was unimportant. This didn't make my supervisor happy as he is a Longhorn. For the record, I'm not a graduate of either institution.

Bump Rogarven. I went to UT and it has a great Law school and the Honors program is top notch, they also have an excellent engineering program and pharmacy program and are opening a med school, but Rice is more "prestigious"

As a professional, I have found that it really doesnt matter where you go to college as long as you graduate. What really matters is what you do after, your work ethic and character. I know people from small D2 schools who are emensely successful and wealthy and others who went to big time universities that are without employment.

But wait. There are people in Austin who think that city has the intellectual firepower of a combo of Manhattan & San Fran.

Not too many of us think this.

Back on topic.....I went to UT (with Earl) & am friends with Ivy League grads. Neither they or us Longhorns think that UT is comparable with Harvard. Sure, UT is a great public school and the top 10% of Longhorns may compare with the middle 25% of Harvard students, but UT does not have the same reputation as an Ivy. (except maybe on the football field the past 3 years).

Rice is the Harvard of Texas.

A&M has a better alumni relations/connections. They protect themselves.

UT is what is known as a "Public Ivy;" it ranks very high in engineering programs, so high, than many Ivy League students on Engineering plans transfer to UT.
