Hi Lori - what kind of business are you in? We're a little ways away from retirement too, but if and when the real estate market turns around, and we can sell our home, then we'll be able to swing it. I shudder to think how many times we've moved, and we're not even military. We like to build, remodel, move on. We always leave stuff way better than we find them. We've definitely worn out our friends and family. Our backs aren't in any shape to move anymore, so we'll be hiring. The only thing about leaving jobs and going to Texas is health insurance. If my husband stays on his job 3 more years I believe he can take it with him. Cobra is expensive. I told him I'd be a Walmart greeter just to have health benefits.

When we left Texas nearly 36 years ago, it was to repay my husband Navy ROTC scholarship to UT-Austin and we honestly expected to return to Texas after his four year commitment to the Navy. Instead he stayed 20 years and retired in 1993. We can't tap the (declining) 401K until 2011 but with his Navy retirement and my income, we could retire now. However, he is paid very well in his current position and he just can't see leaving that income in this economy. I recently celebrated 26 years in direct sales with the Longaberger Company (home party plan selling baskets and home decor), a portable business I should be able to grow anywhere.

I've heard of Longaberger. Beautiful baskets. In the spirit of Texas appreciation, have any of you read "The Unlikely Lavender Queen" by Jeannie Ralston? I really liked it. She was kind of whiny but I loved her description of Blanco, Tx. I've also been ordering books on the Hill Country and movies about Tx. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

Firstly I have to say that I a loving the renewed enthusiasm on this thread! Thank you to everyone for their inputs!

With regards to good "Texas" books, I have a WONDERFUL book called "Texas in her own words" by Tweed Scott. It's excellent - its lots and ots of short stories, almost biographies by both famous and non-famous Texans. Read it - its amazing!

Oh. My. God. That is amazing!!! I want one, like, right now. Wow. I think it would be a totally adorable clutch too.... then you could even use it for evening with a little black dress, in a fun, kitschy way. Totally my style

I am really missing Texas these days, especially because we are in the midst of a Nor'easter going on with LOTS of wet, heavy snow and LOTS of wind to go with it. When I move to Texas I will appreciate the milder winters and the fact that there will be much less snow!

Haha, thank you! I absolutely love it. The company has a website too so I'll find the link if I can and post it up here. It does make a great clutch - I have taken the strap off before and used it as a clutch.
