I would be interested to hear from mechanics on what they think...
Took in a Lexus GX470 SUV to be repaired at a shop that specializes in Japanese cars. The check engine light, traction control, and one other had come on. The car still ran, but I wanted to get these taken care of. The shop called and said its $1500 and is a sensor. No problem, please repair. (Why is it always $1500 to repair a sensor?!)
Leaving the shop we notice that its riding incredibly bad. I turn around and take it back to leave with them again. The problem is that one of the air-ride shocks apparently now has holes in it. This was not an issue prior to us taking it in...at all.
About 2 weeks later I'm having issues with the car starting. The batter checks out so I'm onto the cables and then the starter.
My question is this: is this really just bad luck OR did the shop pull and poke on all kinds of wires when they were replacing the sensors caused the issue with the air-ride shock and now the vehicle starting?
I'm not a mechanic so it may just be coincidence, but it sure seems odd.
seems odd to me too. I guess my first question is how well do you know this mechanic? If he is a first time visit you may be right. if he is a trusted long time mechanic id say its coincidence..
I'd suggest taking it into a Lexus dealer and having them take a look. They should be able to figure out whether the issues were just general wear-and-tear or were due to negligence.
It sounds fishy to me. The air ride would not suddenly develop holes that just became an issue. Chances are it may have been damaged while they had it. Maybe while they were working on it, maybe while sitting on their lot. The other electronic issues, could simply be a larger issue that the original failing sensor was just a symptom of.
If this is the first time you used the guy and have no relationship with him, I would take it to another shop, or even the dealer for another opinion. It could all just be a coincidence, but it doesn't seem like it to me.
Sounds like b.s. Pay $100 or so, let the Lexus dealer do an inspection for you and list out what you need done. Many of the parts you can buy yourself.
Shops will take advantage of people, especially luxury car owners b/c parts/labor are higher (rather more MARK UP) and its more profit for them.
I agree with those here who urge you to get to a Lexus dealership. I've owned a Lexus GS for 8 years now, and TOTAL I have not paid $1500 on repairs. Run from that crappy shop.
"Hi I have 2004 lexus gx470 and 160000 ml and when I started car on the morning the first couple minutes something bursting from transfer case looks like and after we drive couple minutes it's gone any ideas what is this"
