This is why I order a passport card whenever I renew my passport. Costs another $30 more. Well worth the cost.

I always stay in one of the American hotel chains that have in room safes and better security than local ones. So I leave the paper passport in the hotel safe and carry the passport card in my wallet. Sufficed for all except check in into hotels in some countries where they want the paper passport.

I have scanned the paper passport book and put it into Google Drive / Microsoft Onedrive. That way I can retrieve them even if both the card and paper passport are lost unexpectedly.

Here is the info on how to apply for passport card and book while renewing your passport or when applying new

https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...port/card.html

One other advantage - It can be used internally for flights to show to TSA instead of the driver's license. Instead of going to DMV and changing from DL to Real ID drivers license as required after 2020, I will just keep my old driver's license and use my passport card as the ID for TSA on the occasions that I have to fly within USA.

Depends where, most of the time no, there are a few countries that will be a bit of a jerk about it, so I carry it around to alleviate any hassles when they ask for my papers.

Let's see -- when was the last time I packed a coat on an overseas trip?

Yeah... and "Always" keep your coat jacket on you...
Keeping it in your coat jacket is not a "safe" place.

In all fairness, cinco ranch might be strictly a business traveler who rarely has a free leisure day, so spends most his day abroad in business dress, coat and tie.

My first long trip, 7 months in Europe, I took along a drip-dry sport coat and clip-on neck-tie (it was 1968) and wore them often, even hitchhiking. I fit in with the locals, very much to my advantage. The world hadn't gone grunge yet. Passport was in a lapel-pocket wallet. When I think back, I am absolutely amazed that my wallet was never lost or stolen, from Finland to Libya.

The drip-dry sport coat and clip-on necktie should have been a neon sign indicating you weren't a local.

How did you dress in Europe in 1968?
