I am a member of the Hilton Honors reward program and I just recently received an email from them for $199 for 3 nights in Orlando or Las Vegas and 15,000 points. To get that rate you have to book it before March 5th and listen to a timeshare presentation.
I haven't done it but enough people seem to fall for this (buying a timeshare when they hadn't planned to) that I suggest you to a LOT of reading beforehand to strengthen your resolve if you have no plans to buy one. I've heard that the Timeshare Users Group (TUG) is a good one. Look at resale values, posts from people desperate to get rid of them, and especially what people are asking for their timeshares where you plan to get your free stay. It will be a lot easier to resist a sales pitch when you know you can buy the same thing on the secondary market at a fraction of the price.

I dont plan on buying, I just have to sit through the presentation to get the discount

Why go thru all that hassle when a simple, “No, I’m not interested, but thank you for a lovely presentation.” works just fine?
Now, if the OP has thought about a timeshare and is truly interested in what they’re selling, then yes, they should educate themselves; however for free points and a discount stay? Nope
Are you halfway decent at math? As in, can you easily do a rough comparison on what you're currently averaging on lodging expenses vs what the timeshare goons present to you (keep in mind the maintenance fees)? I went through a timeshare presentation once before because of free stuff, and every time they presented me a new offer, I'd counter back with hard facts and math that their "great deal" wasn't worth it. Shuts them up real quick each time - makes it really easy to say no to them .
Going to these presentations is like giving blood to a vampire. It's not worth it.
