Hmmm, best player. That's a tough one. I initially thought Hantz too (although I think he's a jerk). He really took strategizing and aggressive play to a new level. But he never won.
Boston Rob was also aggressive and devious, but still was charming (unlike Hantz). And he won. I will never forget that season where he had those two young girls with him at the end....he just charmed them into voting with him all along, they weren't allowed to even talk to anyone else, and at TC I don't even think they gave any justification at all on why they should win. They just fell under his spell.
I feel so bad for Pat, that is the worst way to go out, ( injury through no fault of his), I hope he really has made a full recovery, backs can be so tricky.
There was a note at the end of the episode that said he was treated for his injuries and made a full recovery.
Ozzie had GREAT survival skills but absolutely zero social game or awareness.
I go with Boston Rob for the GOAT player!
I really enjoyed watching Cochran on his season though - the true underdog.
Russell Hantz should have won his first season but his social skills were nada. He WAS the best ever contestant.

You're all crazy! Hantz was good and definitely should have won his first season, but as you said, his social game was terrible. So I can't see him as the best ever.
Colby, really, Jax??
Boston Rob played an amazing game his FOURTH time though he had a lot of luck landing on a tribe with people who followed him without question. But he did fail to make the jury 2 other times. Granted, I think he should have beat Amber in All-Stars but had he won that, I don't know he would have been back the other 2 times. If you had to choose the Boston Rob from just ONE of his seasons, then possibly. But I'm taking all of their playing time into account.
As for me, until Game Changers, I had an argument for Sandra. She had won both times she had played. She was shrewd and lived with the idea that she'd vote for anyone as long as it wasn't her. But she played terribly in Game Changers so that dropped her on my list.
I've also considered Cirie, often considered the best player to never win. However, if I knock Russell because he doesn't have the social skills to win the game, I have to knock Cirie for relying ONLY on her social skills. She certainly can't perform in challenges.
So that brings us to one of my all-time favorite players, Todd Herzog! He played masterfully in China. He had some form of alliance with almost everyone. He knew how to manipulate people and cut those he didn't need when the time came without making them upset. He would change the voting target when the situation required it, sometimes more than once between the immunity challenge and Tribal Council. And at the final Tribal, he left Jean-Robert speechless with his answer to JR's question, a feat so impressive the jury couldn't help but laugh and applaud. Sadly, Todd ended up an alcoholic after the show and went through a long bad period, but he's cleaned up and I've listened to some impressive interviews with him lately. I'd love to see him make a return to the show.

You call us crazy? I don't even remember who this Todd Herzog is?

You should go back and watch the China season. I think it is a very underrated season overshadowed by Micronesia: Fans vs Favorites which followed it. It's available on Hulu and Amazon Prime if you subscribe to either of those.

Lol, me neither, Tom.
Did Stephanie play in China, isch? She is one of the few I remember who didn't win, wasn't a villain, or do something that really stood out. I just liked her.
I have both Hulu and Prime. Can you tell me which season China was?

Stephenie was on Palau, Guatemala, and Heroes vs Villains (Seasons 10, 11, and 20). China was season 15. China introduced us to James Clement, the gravedigger who returned for Fans vs Favorites and Heroes vs Villians, Amanda Kimmel who returned for the same seasons James did, Courtney Yates, who returned for Heroes vs Villains, and Peih-Gee Law, who returned for Second Chances.
