So I'm about halfway through Season 4, and I think I'm less impressed than I expected. To me Walt isn't the total badass I had imagined except a few cases. He says he is the one who knocks, but in reality he makes Jesse knock and then Jesse is a whiny baby for weeks.

I'm inclined to agree, I kept waiting for this person I heard about, but never saw, to make an appearance. He did bad things, but he was, as someone said in the thread long ago, very cowardly and would totally shrival if someone really called him out.

Perfect description of Walter White. He was mostly passive aggressive (via poisons) if he didn't have a bomb. He mostly had other people to do the dirty work. That's still evil, but not tough guy material.
I keep wondering if the entire fifth season is him killing people that shaped the popular perception of his character, because as of now, I don't see it. He's just a manipulative *******. Now I'm rooting for Hank, but I know how that turns out.
I think you guys/girls are confusing Walts Passive Aggressive attitude for weakness. Walts cowardly, passive aggressive attitude was part of his ploy to usually buy more time.
Smart people(Mobsters/CEO's) Never should have to get their hands dirty

No confusion whatsoeva; Gustova used intellect, less often personal brawn. There was no questioning Tony Soprano's bad arse persona nor many other underworld types of this nature, at least not in the case of most of the one's I've seen portrayed. Walt would have wet his pants had any of those guys stood up to him face to face; it was only his intellect that did get him by which of course is a good thing for his sake. Just imagine any of the guys from Big Bang Theory and you get the picture. He learned how to manipulate the situations to his advantage, but he wasn't fearless in the least. Only time he was truly menacing was when he was dealing with Sky.
I guess we'll all just have to disagree on how we saw the character, but I hope we can agree, he wasn't someone that should be placed on a pedestal.

His strongest moment was when he faced down Tuco, but then he thought he was certain to die soon so probably didn't care about the ramifications. Other than that, it was manipulating Jesse to deal with Gus' dealers, Gale, and eventually Gus because he wasn't man enough to do it himself. Ain't no such thing as a half way crook.

Walter White's character had a combo of good, bad and ugly that allowed him to appeal to the "common" man (normal people like myself who while not exactly a loser, far from a winner). Who would I rather share a couple beers with? Not Tony Soprano. Not Nucky Thompson. Not even Jesse. But Walter White. Sure, I think that would be a fun evening.

Um, and not so normal people like myself as well, I was pulling for him, had sympathy for all the way till the end as well, even if I thought, as many felt, Walt's fate was deservedly sealed.
I vote not to have a drink with any of the mentioned selection. Not that I've never been in such company in my life time. I'll just sit on the sidelines and listen in. Make sure you wear a protective vest.
