America was named after an Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci who in fact had no part in discovering America. Lucky for all that the name Amerigo became America instead.

"Where are you from sir?"

" I'm from the United States of Amerigo"

"Ah yes I thought so. I spotted that Amerigoan accent right away"

To quibble, he did voyage to the new world a few times beginning 5 years after the initial Columbus voyage on Spanish and Portuguese ships. His writings about his voyages were published or at least hand transcribed and spread around the ports. In semi-literate Europe of 1500, the place name was probably mistakenly attributed to the author.

America I believe is the feminine version of Amerigo. Vespucci set Columbus straight on the fact that the New World was not part of Asia but instead a completely separate continent. He was a skilled cartographer and probably superior to Columbus in navigational skills

Translated to Latin and then feminine of the Latin, I think. Amerigo -> the Latin Americus. Then make it feminine so America.

You still end up with situations where those from Latin America object to the term American being used to describe people from the US.

People who live in the U.S.A. are not "United Staters" or USAers. They are Americans.

Even American presidential candidates call it America; those red caps say MAGA not MUSGA.

The states are united in one country, America. Thus, it is correct to either call our country "the United States of America" or just plain America.

I dont think we much care what Latin America objects to. As an American I object to the widespread corruption and lack of democracy in Latin America that results in swarms of refugees crossing our southern border and placing another burden on our tax payers

After the four years of grift, I’m not throwing stones from my glass house.
