I can't say I had a choice of world class restaurants in the county, but there were some pretty good places.

I love Mexican food and the best I had was at Familia Diaz in Santa Paula. Service great, traditional Mexican food, atmosphere nice and cozy. They use to hold cooking classes which included "Tequila tasting" - you learned about the different types of tequila and how they are made.

A restaurant that the name escapes me, down town Ventura....they made a lovely lamb shank. Americans aren't big on lamb so it was nice to discover it. I would always take my own mint sauce bought from the British shop on Main

In Fillmore there was Vallarta Restaurant another Mexican restaurant and Franco's which is no longer around. Francos was the darndest thing you ever saw. It was Italian food all cooked from scratch and served in a restaurant setting in between cars at the William L. Morris Chevrolet dealership on West Ventura Street (highway 126).

You had to book way ahead some times and he was always a good sport coming out and mingling with diners.

Oaks Korean BBQ at LA and Sequoia in Simi Valley. "More Kim Chi"
The only thing I don't like about it is they won't let you use the table top BBQ grill unless you order two BBQ entrees.

Manny's Mexican Grill on Arboles near the 23.

When I was in High School my Econ teacher Mr. Faris always talked about eating at the Italian restaurant in the Chevy dealer in Filmore where he lived!

Super Taco - Oxnard, CA

This place is such a dive but we loved it: Super Taco in downtown Oxnard. I once lost a burrito eating contest to a guy half my size there.

Another place we went to often: Sal's Mexican Inn in Oxnard. Bummer, it looks like it is closed now: http://www.yelp.com/biz/sals-mexican-inn-oxnard

Oops, I forgot about TO Fish and Chips and how could I forget about Lupes?
