It really is strange. Vermont makes the best lists when it comes to unemployment, health, quality of life etc.. yet there are people here who think the other 49 states are full of people making money hand over fist and living in crime free communities.

A lot of the problem is really just Internet forums: they attract complainers like magnets. Letting off a little steam isn't necessarily a bad thing, but is gets boring to read after a while. Also, it might be interesting to compare U.S. forums with forums in other countries. I think a lot of Americans have unrealistic expectations and a sense of entitlement that isn't as strong in other countries.

I haven't seen anyone like that on this forum. I have however seen recent transplants who think that we are headed back to the stone age anyway so Vermont might as well lead the way and eschew any measures that might result in prosperity for for Vermonters who have been here long enough to have viewed first hand the political, regulatory and economic developments.

You must not be reading it then. There have been a few disgruntled Vermonters recently.

I haven't noticed anyone here advocating a return to the Stone Age unless you count arctichomesteader, who has been thinking of moving to Alaska, and he's a Vermonter. I'm not questioning your views on politics, regulation and economic development in Vermont, but I don't see much evidence of the transplants you describe writing on this forum. In my case I like Vermont the way it is and dislike development - and capitalism for that matter - but I have no effect on those matters and am not trying to convince anyone of anything. If someday I don't like it here I'll just leave.

There is a certain amount of inconsistency from Vermonters on these threads. On the one hand, Burlington is the best part of the state for jobs, but on the other hand that doesn't seem to count because it's overrun with transplants who also control the state government and apparently thwart economic development elsewhere in the state with unwieldy regulations.

You don't know what "bad" is until you lived in a state like Rhode Island. I've lived in various places around the US and the world, and I don't think there's a place worse than RI, Mass, and some of Conn. Being a native Rhode Islander, going to NH, VT, or ME is like escaping to a safe haven. Everyday I lived in Australia, it was a wonderful experience, but it just can't compare to the raw beauty and feel of being in Northern New England.

Many of my friend's have permanently moved to Maine or New Hampshire, and there entire lives have changed for the better, and stress is no longer the dominant feeling they have every day they wake up. I haven't been to Vermont much, but I find it hard to believe it's much worse, or much different than the other two northern NE states. In fact, it seems they all have their pros and cons.

So I decided to look on this forum to get some help with moving to Vermont since I never really spent much time there, and I was very shocked to see the negativity permeating this forum. I think the negativity probably has it's valid points, but I really think it's coming from people who haven't experienced enough with the world, and don't realize just how much worse life can really be in other parts of the country and the world. Nevertheless, cost of living is going through the roof across the entire US it seems, and this is a problem we're facing as a nation - New England being one of the hardest hit so far though.

it's like when native Vermonters complain about summers being "so hot!"

it's humid, but I think I've been uncomfortably warm three times in nine years

Damn! we're doing weather? I LOVED 110 degree days in Houston and I'd beg my employees to let me sit in their cars and soak up the heat into my back. I'd go car to car every afternoon.... God, I miss that and my daughter just lamented the lack of that TODAY LIFE is all in the eye of the beholder...

Just embrace what you've got cuz you're still kicking and have something!

Ok silly goose! Follow what your heart tells you to do. Vt as well as NH will try to talk you out of it. OK< they don't want rigid outsiders coming up trying to change the local scene into what most outsiders do. They are pains in the ass. They want to escape their "horribly restricted" cities but come here and make laws to give the same restrictions.

Suck it up and live like us and you're fine. Whine and complain that we don't accomodate like the big city? SHut up and don't come. It's all pretty basic. Too many vacationers come up thinking it's all like vacationland or HGTV Stowe house and blame the locals when reality sets in. Rent a house and try it before you buy it. Pretty simple.
