The project is on Campus Dr. diagonally across from the College Park Metro garage. The big parking lot next to the tennis bubbles will be the firt phase. Then the warehouses and auto body shops in the back will be the other phases.

The project is getting more press. It's in the Diamondback and WTOP today.

College Park Car Wash is under contract to Gilbane for more student housing. The property is almost 1.5 acres on Baltimore Avenue. Gilbane just opened Tempo to the south and has Atworth under construction at CP metro station.

Do you know if the 1.5 acres includes the 7-Eleven or just the CP Car Wash?

Just the car wash. But it would be good if the project site could expand to capture the existing traffic light, too.

Did some digging and discovered that Mazza has a master lease for some apartments with Howard and had such an agreement last year, too. Also learned there have been parties recently interested in buying Mazza and converting it to non-student housing. That would appear to indicate student housing in College Park needs to be adjacent to campus to be viable. Other college towns don't have available land next to campus for such redevelopment, so we should be thankful we do!

College Park should be thankful, but most importantly, opportunistic. If other colleges are sending their students to College Park to live, that is a situation that College Park can take advantage of and create a true college town not just for UMD students, but for all DC area college students - creating a student village. Perhaps this is why developers are goin all in on student housing projects along RT.1 They may also be marketing to other universities. And with the Purple Line, access to other universities would be that much better. I always wondered how so many student developments could be planned without running out of students to fill them.

But of course, there also needs to be a balance of students and long term residents/offices to prevent the ghost town feel of College Park in the summer.

The University of Maryland has recently opened 2 new dormitories and 1 new dining hall. It has plans to build 6 more dormitories and another dining hall. It's like a race to see who can provide the best living facilities for undergrads.

Geeze. Are we underestimating just how many students are applying to UMD? Are we talking Ohio State numbers? That's a ton of beds being built in parallel with the private residences along RT. 1. Has the university been that behind with beds?

Are students from other universities snatching up all the new student apartments?

This puts it into perspective. 40,792 students. That's a pretty sizable student population. Ohio State has 61,369. Just found this data:

Quote:
Students with On-Campus Housing

New First-time Students: 87.9% 5,147 out of 5,854
All Undergraduates: 39.0% 11,826 out of 30,353

UMCP has been on a building binge since the Glendening Administration. It's the flagship university. Everyone wants to go there. There's really no reputable in-state alternative. Yeah, I understand UMBC is a good school, but no one outside the State of Maryland considers it a good school or at least is aware of its strong academic reputation. Hence, it's lack of growth. The UMCP and UMB merger has resulted in a university with combined R&D expenditures exceeding $1 billion. That makes UMCP a top 20 university in terms of R&D. The only drawback (not a big deal) is its surprisingly low endowment for a school of its size.
