I said, he was never convicted of a crime....funny how ppl ignore facts or as I like to say, don't let the facts get in the way....remember, it's not what you know, it's what you THINK you know that counts.....

Although I hate what Barry has become, he represents a lot of people who are down trodden and have no where else to turn. Back in his heyday, he hooked up a lot of people and did not even look out for himself. Today is lives in a meager apartment and only has his council pay as a means of survival. He was always the one trying to help a friend out whether it was legally or unethically.

People make more excuses for Marion Barry than any other politician. I'm not sure how he does it, but it is his single most impressive accomplishment.

Yes, back in his heyday he cut DC jobs, leading to a spike in unemployment and crime, then he turned around and 'hooked up a lot of people' and racked up nine-digit annual budget deficits and created a crippling legacy of pension liabilities for decades.

You have got to be kidding yourself that he wasn't 'wasn't looking out for himself'. Giving thousands of jobs to constituents to stay in power and illegally directing contracts to friends and influential people in the city is looking out for himself. A public official is responsible for protecting the public trust. Even a predominance of good deeds among his personal, ethical and public failings is a betrayal of that trust.

I have a complete failure of pity for his 'meager' living situation. $130,000 goes plenty far. That's just his public income. Any financial problems he has stems from paying back the IRS and DC for years of unpaid taxes from when he was also making a 6-figure public salary.

By no means do I agree with his style of politics. I do agree that he turned DC into a sesspool but he also was viewed as one of the people. That's why it's hard for so many people to understand why he is still in power today. Barry is anti establishment. He has a great knack to pander to many of his constituents who feel the same way.

I can't speak for Mr. Barry's living conditions but financially he's doing just fine. So I wouldn't go calling him or any DC councilmembers self sacrificing saints when they're pulling in six figures.

I missed this. You beat me to it. Yeah I just can't roll with all the praise about his meager living conditions either.

I agree with that assessment. Ultimately, I think he is a reflection of his constituency.
