News is still sketchy but a Mag 7.4 earthquake centerd about 30 Km northwest of Christchurch occured about 4:35 AM local time this morning.

We have several New Zealanders contributing to this forum and I hope they and theirs are doing OK.

I really hope everyone is okay, isn't it early in the morning over there? A 7.4 is nothing to play with.

I wish all New Zealand-ers the best. Sounds like a big one. Hope it wasn't really bad as it sounds.

I have already commented in the NZ/Australian thread but my parents who live in Christchurch were pretty shaken (literally).

Their home has been damaged and stuff strewn everywhere but luckily it is (apparently) structurally ok.

Their cat has gone AWOL though....

Hope to hear from ChesterNZ soon (hope all ok).

Our thoughts are with our kiwi cousins.

Glad to hear there are no deaths and hope they can rebuild quickly.

I wrote about this in another thread: //www.city-data.com/forum/austr...-2-hits-2.html

Thanks for your concern everyone. This is probably the most exciting thing to ever happen here!

We weren't hit too badly. The insurance should cover what little damage there is here. My uncle was a lot worse off. He lost several bottles from his whiskey collection (that he had been aging for a long time). They shattered and spilled onto the tiled floor. As they have underfloor heating the whiskey evaporated and now the whole house smells of whiskey!

It's unfortunate that no one cares about the nine people who were killed in a plane crash on the West Coast -- this is easily a far worse disaster, but they only get a minute or two in the news because their deaths happened to coincide with this relative triviality.

Is this earthquake in New Zealand a mere coincidence? What about all the others around the globe? Jesus gave us an idea.

Luke 21
[11] And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
