I saw my first flock of geese flying over heading south today. My brother said he saw some yesterday. But we have been still getting some hummingbirds visiting the garden and the feeders, probably on their way south too.
I haven't seen any wooly bear caterpillars so I can't make a prediction based on their colors. They sprayed for gypsy moths last year so maybe that did them in. The squirrels seem to have thin tails but maybe thats because they are young. The acorns are small this year but that might have been due to the dry spell we had all July and early August.
It was in the 40s last night and this was the coldest its been.
24c/75f and very windy.. going outside is like walking into a hair dryer! Temperatures 11 degrees above the October average.. but frost should arrive by the end of this week
Couldn't ask for better autumn weather. There has been some breaks of sunshine this morning, but generally its been cloudy. Currently in the low 50s after a low of 44 F this morning.
I don't think Chch weather is that bad. The warm weather offsets the cold weather in my opinion. Although I should add, that my two years in Chch were straight after having lived in Invercargill for six years. Living on the hills in Chch made the weather more enjoyable as well.

My parents had a house in Huntsbury. Not quite the optimal west-facing position with no easterly exposure, but the lower half was well sheltered from the NE. No smog, and frosts were lighter than they were below. Views to the Alps were good, too.
PS: A quick check shows Ch'ch's sun total for Jul-Sept (all city and aero records back to 1930) was only 3 hours short of the record high set in 1959.
Anyone get any foliage yet? I thought I saw a bit from ben86's photos. London looks further ahead than us.
From what it looks like, this year's foliage season will be rather poor. The cloudy, extremely wet weather probably means drab fall colors and the overabundance of rain might increase fungi and diseases. Might be delayed a bit too, has we've had almost no cool nights (<45°F) and some very warm (low to mid 80s) days in the last few weeks). I think fall foliage needs cool nights to trigger a good color change.
