Looks like this exceeds the previous monthly record by half a degree celcius. Very unusual indeed.
True - I was hoping we'd get to 30 seeming as this spell might be the best chance we ever get, but I'm really not complaining - these exceptional spells have just kept coming since late November last year. By the way, the Welsh national record went up from 26.4C to 28.2C today, which is even more impressive a margin, whereas across the sea barely a hundred miles away from where that Welsh record was set Dublin, which got 25.5C on Wednesday (the highest anywhere in Ireland got all year!) only got up to 14C today and it was pouring with rain

The Yorkshire record was smashed too at 29C at Church Fenton, 12 miles from here.

'Smashed' is the word! I can't remember anything remotely close to that in October in the nearly 20 years I lived in Yorkshire, or most years in midsummer for that matter - that's perhaps even more impressive than Gravesend with the extra latitude involved. I wonder if anywhere at that latitude has ever got higher this late in the year? I've just looked up Edmonton, AB and they have an October record of 28.6C, so considering they are 2000ft above sea level I can only imagine yes, somewhere around 53-54N has had a warmer October day. Still yet another 2010-2011 weather event I'll probably never forget though!
Quite cool in some parts of the country. Washington DC recorded a high of 52 F today, 21 F below average. For some reason its been noticeably cooler down there compared to farther north. Meanwhile it looks like the upper midwest will be very warm with highs in the 70s and 80s.
On another note, I went to an outdoor party today under mostly cloudy skies, breezy, and cool conditions. Temperatures were in the 50s. I thought it was very nice. No bugs or sunshine to deal with.
