There's Livistona chinensis at an outlet mall near me, I believe they get some protection though.

London got 15 consecutive days above 30C in 1976.

I think Leeds had 7 days above 30C in 1995 which is good go8ng for us.

I have one growing in my Southsea garden, not that big, but it wasn't fazed by the recent cold winters & wasn't protected either...
Only two mature specimens I know of in this area and one died about a year ago (planted in the 1850s). I've got a couple of young ones, which is what I base their hardiness off. They get frequent frost, as well as no water but are doing well -they do get a little sun frazzled, but only during the height of summer. I think that is only a problem with younger plants.

Nowhere in NZ averages more than 15 days above 30C, so 20 is a good amount. the record for my area is 4 days, and that was in 1972. Go a few km inland, and I'm guessing there would be around 5-10 days.

Where were you last year to get 20 such days if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah 1976 was impressive. The fact those days were consecutive is very impressive though, incredible even. 1976 had 21 days above 30C, which is surely the record.

That will take some beating.

Yeah, 2006 had about 15 or 16, 1995 had 18, so 1976 is almost certainly the record holder.. unless someone has data for the 1911 heatwave

All of those 16 days were above 31c, and only a couple failed to pass 32c. In the SE as a whole, there were 16 consecutive days above 32c.

It's a shame that this straddled over two months.. the averages would have been much higher had it happened in one calendar month..

The average high for the 30 days was 29.3c, 1.1c warmer than July 2006.
